Thaxton calls it a day.
Thaxton calls it a day.
Jon Thaxton announced his retirement at a press conference earlier this afternoon, according to the Norwich Evening News website http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/content/sport/
Thanks for the memories Jono, and good luck for the future.

good call. good career.
Re: Thaxton calls it a day.
Good luck for the future Jono.
I think Jono has done the right thing in hanging up the gloves. It's such a shame itv wont be covering many more boxings shows because I thought he'd make a very good summariser.

Re: Thaxton calls it a day.
One more win for the Lonsdale so if Murray vacates I can see him coming back.
But bet of luck to him.

But bet of luck to him.
Re: Thaxton calls it a day.
shame he didnt get to win the british title outright good luck to jon had a very entertaing carrer hope he doesnt come back
Re: Thaxton calls it a day.
i think if he'd got the lonsdale belt outright he may have missed out on a european title shot at home v melero. when you see the opening you have to take it. i think he did the right thing. some ppl say hard luck with the murray fight, but murray hadn't even started sitting down on his shots yet. i would say the hardest luck was mezaache, whom jono basically destroyed in a round only for the visitor to survive due to illegal means and beat thaxton controversially.
a thrilling career and it's good to see him get out at the right time. it must be tempting to hang around for one last title fight, but by 'eck, he's fought bloody everyone (and bloody it has been at times!) - this guy has had a good go at it, distinguished himself on british and euro scenes, and there will be little room for thinking "what if".
thaxton has shown, if you believe in yourself, if you prepare thoroughly, you give yourself the best chance of success when the oppotunity comes. that sounds very basic, but it's true and it's what has made him an inspirational figure in british boxing.
BM and BN - hope you both give thaxton a proper send off.

Anywhere I can watch the fight again online? ITV website re-run playing up this end.
Re: Thaxton calls it a day.
really glad jon is quitting and not becoming a name on a prospects record. Hes accomplished a lot and always gave good value,It was great seeing him win the british and finally the european in the twilight of his career.
definetly a shame he ll struggle to get pundit gigs now,i hope he stays in the sport somehow, very classy and humble man

?Do many people turn up to a John Thaxton press conference?
Not having a pop at him or anything, a very good and entertaining fighter, just wondered if it was really a gathering of the national/local media or a phone call to a local Journo?

He def deserves a Lonsdale belt for keeps
Re: Thaxton calls it a day.
That's exactly how I'll remember him. A brilliant role model both in and out of the ring.Autobarn wrote: an inspirational figure in british boxing.

to think, he won both his belts with a shoulder that must give him lots of pain and aggo, as well. top man.
but he should have taken on murray before murray got this good

Re: Thaxton calls it a day.
People have almost forgotten that Thaxton fought with a handicap of a bum shoulder which almost ended his career completely, that he went on to achieve what he did is the more remarkable as a result.
I think Thaxton also missed a trick by fighting above his ideal weight for much of his career.

Re: Thaxton calls it a day.
yep.
i wonder why he did fight as a light welter all that time. he always looked a bit too short for a light welter. bet it was hard for him to make lightweight on his comeback.

An exciting, gutsy fighter. Good luck Jono!
