Lightheavyweight era

Post by Grimm »

Out of all of the great light heavyweights which era would you say was the best with the most talented fighters?

I know we have the late 40's early 50's with Moore,Johnson and Charles.

Then there is the late 70's early 80's with Spinks,Qawi,Muhammad and Muhammad.

Me personally, I say the era with Spinks was better which I know many will disagree with.

I agree with you, the depth was incredible. There were guys like jesse Burnett who is a footnote in history but was far better than many alphabet champions.

- Was a wonderful era, but the 20s trumps any era, any 2-3 eras combined actually.

Greb, Tunney, Carpentier, Levinsky, Battling Siki, Loughren, Rosenbloom, Dillon, Kid Norfolk, Gibbons, and many others. 8 of those I listed are in Ibro top 20 LHs and the first two are Ibro p4pers.

I like the late 70s through to the early 90s era. BUT I would have
to say that the 1950s into the early 60s was excellent for me as
a viewer. I have some good fights from that period, and the talent
was divine to view.

This is a great topic.

1918-1928: Gene Tunney, Harry Greb, Kid Norfolk, Tommy Gibbons, Tommy Loughran, Georges Carpentier, Battling Levinsky, Jack Delaney, Paul Berlenbach, Mickey Walker. The era contained a nice lead in (Jack Dillon, Gunboat Smith, arguably Sam Langford, though he was a bit heavy by then) and tail (Jimmy Slattery, Maxie Rosenbloom) as well. Great era for light-heavyweights.

WWII era to the late 40s: Jimmy Bivins, Tami Mauriello, Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Lloyd Marshall, Joey Maxim.

Mid 70s to early 80s: Avenemar Peralta, Jorge Ahumada, Victor Galindez, John Conteh, Mate Parlov, Marvin Johsnon, Richie Kates, Yaqui Lopez, Jesse Burnett, Eddie (Gregory) Mustafa Muhammad, Matthew (Franklin) Saad Muhammad, Mike Rossman, James Scott, Michael Spinks, Dwight (Braxton) Muhammad Qawi.

At the end of the day, I guess I pick the 1920s.

The late 1970s era had lots of great fights but not many 'great' fighters. It's fondly remembered b/c of the many competitive matchups and wars of that era that were shown on network TV.

But the 19teens through the early 50s had a much deeper and skilled field of fighters at 175.

That said, the late 70s/early 80s were definitely much better than the division of recent years. Really I don't think there has been a deep 175 lb division since the 1980s.

The Ring rates Spinks,Qawi,Muhammad and Johnson in the top 20.
