Saturday night shocker in Japan!

Post by MightyWarrior »

The shocked commentator sounds like he's just seen Godzilla himself.

Highly touted super feather champ Jorge Linares, just signed up for a big future with golden boy, takes on fellow Mexican Juan Salgado. Don't blink -what a punch.

Great find MW! Looked like a sweeping right hand caught him cold. Shocking loss for Linares who I have always rated as a good class fighter. He should be able to bounce back from this set back though I would have thought, so long as the mental scars of an early KO loss dont ruin him.

Yeah feel sorry for him, such a sudden end to a great run in front of his fans like that.
The first punch finished him, he got up but was still unconcious I think, just on instinct. Not sure he even knew the fight had started by that point.
The ref pulls up his gloves, instead of asking him to raise them - which I don't think he would have - and sends him back out to get beheaded. Ref was obviously in shock as well.

Hate to sound pedantic, but I think Linares is Venezualan isn't he, rather than Mexican?

Nice shot... always like to see a fighter run accross the ring after the other fighter has been KDed

Yep you're probably right, adopted by the Japanese I think. Like Terry says, I think he'll come back from this, just caught cold by the punch of a life time, or maybe the other guy is the 2nd coming of Ruben Olivares.

Perfect left hook to the temple, you can see it here in slow mo, during the interview @ 5 min in.

Yeah, great work from the TV director there - if that had been in 3D I'd have sh*t myself. Great angle, quality stuff.

That left hook was just lightning quick. Technically great but he must be one heavy handed mofo too.

I expect nothing less from Mighty Warrior than this :TU:

i believe it was a left hook but I ain't trying to be clever i had to watch the replay to tell.

thought it was bad reffin at first but it wasn't. Linares just didn't defend himself quickly enough after he clearly signalled to the ref he was good to go on.

Very shocked when seeing this on fightnews!
Only watched a few of his fights, yet still had this little guy down as a future star. Looked awesome in winning the title against Larios, managed horribly ever since.

I get a lot of Japanese stuff on DVD and these fellas love their boxing and really get excited. Shocker for Linares, but a one punch KO is probably not as damaging as if he had been outboxed, beaten in every department and stopped later on. That might sound strange but ou know what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean - Khan's a good example of that. I think aside from the physical implications, it's the fact that it allows the fighter to preserve their psyche. Getting blown out in one can allow the fighter to convince themselves it was a freak punch, they were caught cold etc, etc, etc, but being systematically broken down, out-punched and out-manned, is far harder to explain away to yourself and if one of your strengths as a boxer has been your belief that you're unbeatable, the fragility caused by this illusion being shattered can have long-lasting implications.

i would have loved to hear a Jap commentate on Terry O' Connor's scoring last month. It would have sounded like Pearl Harbour II was about to go off.
