Froch: Big in Thailand?

Froch-Taylor, one of the biggest British fights of the year, involving our only world champ against an American A-lister on away ground, almost went on without British TV, evntually getting a one-day delay at the last minute.

In Thailand, the fight was shown live on one of the cable operators' standard sports channels.

Froch-Dirrell, an intriguing contest and part of the unprecedented and fascinating Super Six tournament, is on British TV, but tucked away on PPV on an obscure new channel.

In Thailand, it is being shown live on terrestrial TV!

It baffles me that British TV doesn't get behind Froch more, but it's even more baffling that a country with no stake in Froch or his opponents should show his fights, especially on terrestrial TV! There is plenty of boxing on TV here, but this is the first instance I can think of when terrestrial TV has shown a fight that doesn't involve a Thai.

Anyway, it's just daft that I can watch Froch with ease, and for free, when I'm 9,000 miles away from home, but you guys can't.

On the other hand, Thai TV didn't show Poonsawat-Dunne. Go figure.

my guess is it's a question of how much the rights have cost. channel 3 may have got them quite cheap while the bbc might have been quoted a figure that was too high.

also, ols, froch v taylor wasn't legally available in thailand. it was on a south african station that could be picked up with a dish.

I know Super Sport comes from SA but it's not illegal, as far as I know. There's even a Thai website for it.

As for Froch-Dirrell, is that right that it's "live" at 8.15am? That would mean 2.15am in the UK. Well, it wouldn't be the first time a British fight accommodated the US schedule, but just checking.

Anyway, might this be the start of further international boxing on terrestrial TV here? We can hope...

Completely agreed with you - now theres a change!!

Boxing politics - maybe it has more to do with the TV Execs and the promoters not getting on - I dont know for sure!!!

What I will say despite what some have said on here - Meaty Mick has done a fabulous job with Froch and its time the TV Execs ate some humble pie!!!

theres a contradiction with brittish boxing fans i think, im taking a mate to see froch-dirrell and hes got £50 tickets with his GF but when i told him its £14.95 to watch it on TV along with abraham-taylor he said "im not paying that to watch froch" i didnt understand

Booger...I'm not long back from their. Well enjoy the fight dude. I'd be at the event only I am in Edinburgh the day after running. Fun, not.

Some serious money will exchange hands over there for this one. If there's one thing the Thai's love it's a gamble. Man United 0 West Ham 1, a couple of years ago nearly bankrupted the country I've been told. Even suicides involved....

I understand completely it will be cheaper here than there. But that doesn't excuse British TV not backing their own. And it remains odd that Thai terrestrial TV is showing it, when they never show non-Thai boxing usually. There will have been plenty of other affordable international fights, so why this one in particular? I know it has nothing to do with Thai TV "getting behind" Froch. My headline was just a joke, when you hear about people claiming to be "big in Japan/Germany," etc.

And the last time I looked at my original post, I was referring to Froch as our only world champion at the time of the Taylor fight. Which he was. No need to throw insults.

I think if you look into you will find that many fights are shown in a country where no home boxer is featured. it happens frequently across Asia, especially in Japan but also in Thailand.

There are middle men who make a living pushing this stuff out across the world, it provides cheap but decent quality to networks looking to fill airtime.

So it is not so baffling it is being shown in Asia.

I think you know the reason it is not being shown here, as has been suggested in many threads. Woukd you shell out for this fight if it lost you money and it didnt secure you the right to show Froch in the future?

When I was in Cambodia they showed the Hatton Malignaggi fight live on terrestrial so I don't think it's that unusual.

As someone who lives in Thailand, I'm TELLING you it is unusual for terrestrial TV to show non-Thai boxing. In fact, it's the first time in the 18 months I've been here.
