Sparringspartners of Mike Tyson?

Post by Jan »

Does anybody know the sparringspartners Tyson used? I know he had MC Call, Corey Sanders, Derrick Jefferson. But this is all I know.

Perhaps not a regular sparring partner (in fact I'm pretty sure he wasn't), but during '86/'87 he did have a few sessions with a young heavyweight from Texas by the name of Mike Williams. Supposedly, Williams did rather well against him, and this boosted his rep a little for a short time. Not long after, however, he dropped a rather one-sided decision to Tim Witherspon and ended up being stopped a couple of times. End of the road for him.

Tyson sparred with Greg Page and got dropped by him. You can see it with your own eyes on Youtube.

Unless I'm mistaken, he also sparred with Mike "The Bounty" Hunter, whom I saw defeat an aging Pinklon Thomas at Ft. Bragg, NC in 1990.

British cruiserweight Glenn McCrory was a regular sparring partner for Tyson. He prides himself that in over 100 rounds of sparring Tyson never floored him and he managed to hold his own as well.

the above post should let others know just how important some sparring stories should be taken......it sounds crazy to me that the only sparring partner of Tyson to do anything of note was McCall...he must have been a real strong guy to hang with Tyson... and to not tlet Tyson ruin his career.......

Years ago I was watching Tuesday Night Fights (I miss that show). In one of the televised fights of the evening, they had a heavyweight who the announcers mentioned was a sparing partner of Tyson. However, this guys record was like 0-0-0-1 (a NC) or 0-0-1 or (0-1). Anyway, the guy lost early to another boxer with a limited record as well.

It seemed to me that he got his fight on TV by being a sparing partner of Tyson. However, I kept thinking " Tyson must be hiring guys who aren't pushing him, this won't bode well for him if he isn't being challenged in practice".

Back in the day, a diary was kept of all of Tyson's sparring partners. It was once made available to HBO & I remember one comment by one sparring partner who said "He does not want any piece of Mike Tyson!"

McCrory & McCall have already been mentioned, but Jesse Ferguson was a regular sparring partner aswell!

Apparently Elijah was absolutely world class when sparring, he pretty much outboxed everyone he sparred with. Another gym fighter though, couldn't carry this ability into his real fights

Here are the names of several others I found on-line in various places.

Rufus Hadley
Everett(Bigfoot)Martin
Mike Jameson
Stacy McKinley
Marc Machain
Garing Lane
Shane Cameron(for McBride fight)

Also it was reported that Mike Tyson used 14 sparring partners
when he was preparing to fight Frank Bruno, but only 3 were left
when he finished training.

Not only did Greg Page knockdown Tyson in Tokyo,he later caused a postponment of Tyson's fight with Alex Stewart(originally scheduled for September.22.1990),when Greg Page landed a punch on Tyson that opened up a deep cut over Tyson's right eye in sparring that required 48 stitches(even though both were wearing head gear.

I read that in an old issue of JET Sept-24-1990.
Actually it didnt say it was a punch that caused it,
"Both fighters were wearing headgear,"it was not know how Tyson was cut".

Its sounds like it may have been by an elbow.
George Foreman was wearing headgear too, when he was cut by an elbow in Zaire in 1974.

Lots of different types of headgear floating around.
You can still get cut and busted up good wearing
headgear.
Elbows or not.

yeah must of bin an elbow as they can cause bad cuts as in thai boxing, mma etc, i know its not a mike tyson subject but lately fighters are tending to wear the nose protection headguard like a crash helmet especially the mexican fighters, marquez, de la hoya etc, obviously due to incidents like this happening in sparing what does everyone think of the headguards?

Before the first Tyson-Bruno fight, ESPN did a profile on Tyson's sparring partners. The two guys they spoke to were Jesse Ferguson and Gary Lightbourne.
