Remember once running down the front at theMEN to see Magee-Bosworth 2. After the fight Magee left the ring and me and my mate shouted 'well done Eamonn'. At that point he turned around and gave the nastiest look you will see.

Fair enough :D

Been in his company and found him to be quite dangerous, although he did not do anything as such he was intimidating and very highly strung. Just my opinion

I've heard similar from people who've met him, seems a bit of a loose cannon.

No surprise

Magee - always seemed like a bit of a bad egg

A nasty man - thats the impression I got.

He hit the headlines a few years ago after being invovled in some violent trouble on his housing estate

I can remeber the details - wether he was to blame or the victim

I think he was the victim - and got beaten up by some dodgy sorts

That tells you the kind of circles Magee has mixed

This will happen again and again - to certain people

Look what happened to Mike Tyson

It makes no difference if Magee had made £500,000 in his career or £5,000,000

Same with Tyson he was said to have earned up to $300 million in his career

But I bet that even if Mike had made $1 billion in his career - he would have still ended up broke

He was always going to end up broke - because its just a flaw in him as a person that he has got bad habits that are gonna destroy him.

Sad but true.

Let me tell you a wee story that may make you laugh. I met him in england when Brian Magee was fighting Stevie Maguire. In the hotel there was a fight that broke out, between the scottish fans and some english rugby type guys, the scots guys got horsed in and sorted the engish guys out but near the end Eamonn Magee waded in totally pissed, one of the scots guys who was a doorman just wrapped his arms around Magee and pinned him into a corner, Magee went apeshit shouting let me go or I'll kill you patter, the guys just laughed and kept a hold of him till he calmed down, then let him go and dismissed him like a child   Not that mental then

are you some sort of k^ob jockey what do you mean nobody cares about him ??? why knock the man while he.s down .

i for one thought magee was the most talented fighter ever to come out of ireland .

ok he never won a main world title but he would of gave them all a good run for there money .

why is it that people are so quick to stick the boot in . ok magee might of been involved in some bad stuff out of the ring . but this is a website on boxing . so why can't we talk about what he achieved in the ring .

Whether it's just me and in fact I've got completely the wrong end of the stick, Magee always struck me as a nasty piece of work. Not in an awful immoral way, but just in a way that I'd never be able to feel completely comfortable in his company in case I cracked a joke and he killed me, and in a way that I suspect he was a bit of a local hard man and got involved in all kinds of nasty petty criminal violence.

Just an impression.
as usual Carbo talks sense. You couldnt relax around Eamonn - you'd make some innoxious jape and the next thing is your arse would be on the screed.

Julian reckon Kelly was a better fighter than Magee, yes Kelly was classier but without a dig - Eamonn had it all except the will power to knock the sauce on the head. I have heard off a few people that he was on the booze for the whole week leading up to the Hatton fight - possibly a exaggeration but probably some truth to it. There certainly are pictures of him with a can of Mangers in his paw AFTER the Hatton fight - this was before Magners was readily available in Britain so where did it come from?

Anyway I remember his fight against Urkal being one of the most entertaining fights I've ever seen - and would love if anyone could send me a copy of it if they have it.
Bless you. Nobody's ever told me that I usually talk sense. I think that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me.

Meantime, it's interesting to note from the responses here that my suspicions about Magee turned out to be pretty accurate.

he was always very belligerent in his post-fight interviews. they were great to watch but i wouldnt have fancied being the one asking the questions.

he's the sort of bloke you dread sitting next to on the late train - pissed with a hint of violence in everything he says and does.

without doubt he does get pissed off when people mention the Hatton fight. But its hardly their fault - it was the highest profile fight of his career and drew a massive TV audience - it probably hits a nerve because he knows he could have won it.

I remember after he lost a very disputed verdict to Paul Burke, he said to the interviewer something like Burke hadn't landed a punch all night. Burke came over and said " Who gave you the bleeding nose? The ref!" :DDD

I remember after one fight he was wandering around the back of the arena rat arsed trying to find the exit. I pointed him in the direction of the spiral staircase and he re-appeared five minutes later goinjg "You boys are taking the piss I can't find no fornicating staircase".

I think I was so engrossed waiting for an interview (can't remember who off, may have been Dunne) to care and he subsequently disappeared.

As for the incident. He got into a ruck in his Ardoyne estate with some hard nut over a snowman. Not sure of the ins and outs but that was the outline. He lives in the West of the city now I believe (when not on bail).

I remember basically he was in his car, or something, and was dragged out and beaten with baseball bats real bad by three or four local fatnecks. I think he popped a couple of ribs and his legs needed so many pins and bolts and bars that they looked like a grotesque Meccano experiment for a few months.

To be fair to him, he did incredibly well to box again after that, because the doctors said he never would. Probably testimony to the toughness and bloody mindedness of the man.

I also remember reading that he got a punishment beating off the IRA, but whether that was legend or real, I can't say.

I remember going to a show with Frank Maloney in Peterborough - Frank took me into Magee's dressing room to introduce me - I asked Eamon to sign a photo card for me for the lads back at camp - wondered why he gave me a filthy look!!!

Frank explained to me outside that he was from the republican side of Northern Ireland!!! - trust me to put my gob in it!!! :TU:

Whilst Magee has got a bit of a streak to him - nonetheless I note there is absolutely no sympathy for his gambling addiction where as people on here are prepared to give druggies a break!!!

Lads - gambling is just as much of an illness as drugs - I know its f*cking horrible - you get the buzz out of the winners but the moment you start losing you start chasing the money and the hole gets bigger - put my mrs through years of no money!!! - so please bear the gambling side of things in mind when you are quick to sympathise with drug users but slag off the likes of Magee.

The backend of the snowman story was Magee walking into to the door of this IRA lads house, pissed up and laying the nut on him! On the way home he got stopped and assaulted!

What was the score over the snowman????

The story in the paper said that the confrontation was over an argument between their kids over a snowman, and obviously thing were taken quite far as no one would back down, I would be keen to hear an alternative version

Magee gave the guy a hiding, the guy was a member of the PIRA and subsequently got Eamonn back a few days later by trying to drag him out of his friends(mob handed btw) car and beating sh1t outta him with baseball bats and God know's what else. Eamonn only survived being murdered cos his pal drove off at high speed with Magee half in/half out of the car.

All of this is partly why I wanted to do his autobiography. I am f*cking telling you, it would be the best boxing biog for donkey's (nothing to do with me...there's just a million stories about him). Even when I went over to meet him was crazy.

But, ahem, the subject was not the most reliable or co-operative. If I lived in Belfast I'd have definitely done it, regardless. Too much hassle from across the water.
