Greg Page vs Gilberto Acuña

Post by worldwide »

While looking over Gilberto Acuna's record in my database I came across a fight on 81/03/03 in Miami Beach, FL where Gilberto lost on KO by 1 against a heavyweight named Greg Page.
Is this the former champion or someone else? The fight does not appear on Greg Page's record.
If somebody has info (maybe a Ring Magazine from this period or other) please let me know.
On another note; there is an entry on Gilberto's record vs Jose A. Galvez in Bilbao (Spain) KO by 2 on
78/01/06.
I have Gilberto winning this fight KO 2. Anybody has some info on this bout with what it is supposed to be?
Thanks.

I also have a discrpency...

I was looking at Joe Bugner's record on IPCRESS.com and it had him listed as Stopping Acuna in the 8th round, not KO'ing him in the 6th... I oculdn't find anything else on this fight like a magazine article thoug

This is what I have,
81/03/03 in Miami Beach, FL Gilberto Acuna WON KO 1 against Greg Payne, spelled P-A-Y-N-E
Sources : May 81 Ring, page 49, Tonight’s Boxing Program #376 page 2

78/01/06 Bilbao, Spain Gilberto Acuna WON KO 2 Jose A. Galvez
Source : 1983 Ring Record Book page 36

80/08/23 Inglewood, CA. Joe Bugner TKO 6th Gilberto Acuna
Source : Jan 81 Ring, page 52, 1983 Ring Record Book page 36,

Thanks for the info Blue.

It gets weirder though. The 1982 RRB
has Greg Payne W 4 Leroy Broadus in Tampa, FL on 81/03/03. So if Payne was knocked out in 1 by Acuna in Miami, who won a decision against Broadus in Tampa?
Blue: Does the same Ring Magazine show the fight card in Tampa as well?

I have the same RRB stating Acuna KO 2 Galvez in 1978 so unless PHIL (who did the entrance in the database) or anyone else objects, I will "reverse" the result to look: Acuna KO 2 Galvez within the next few days.

Glad U answered back,
Unfortunately, the Tampa 81/03/03 result wasn’t in the May 81 issue.

So,
I pulled out my Old Tonight’s Boxing Program & weekly newsletter #376 by Flash Gordon.
The Tampa show including Greg Payne’s win is in it.
The Miami show has,
Gilberto Acuna, 211, San Jose, Costa Rica, KO’d unknown Georgie Small managed tanker at 1:50 of the 1st.

Later, Gordon writes,
{As for the unknown Georgie Small tanker, Small, who operates a gym in Ft. Lauderdale, has been reported to us as having delivered divers under assumed names before. Tonight he came with a tanker billed as “Greg Payne of Orlando.” Of all the ironies, the real Greg Payne was boxing the same evening, March 3rd, at Tampa!}

So if it WASN’T Page or Payne, who was it ??
So now we’re back to square ONE !

For the curious younger minds,
Malcolm “Flash” Gordon is the guy who exposed the ABC-Don King-Ring magazine heavyweight tourney scandal around the late 70’s.

Hello Phil,

You haven't done anything terrible, dont worry.
I believe that you made an entrance into the database as follows:
Jose A. Galvez KO 2 Gilberto Acuna.

Me and Blue has a Ring Record Book that states:
Gilberto Acuna KO 2 Jose A. Galvez.

Just wondering what your source is. Maybe it's just a "typo" error.
Please reply.

Blue: I guess we'll never know who Acuna fought on 81-03-03. I'll try to
make an entrance with the infamous "unknown opponent" with a note attached.

Thanks guys.

Just to add a little fuel to the fire.

My 79 Pugilato on page 533 also sez.
78/06/01 Bilbao, Spain, Gilberto Acuna KO 2 Jose A. Galvez.

I can't understand why I would have entered that bout.

My entering of bouts has come to a complete stop (at this moment owing to one thing or another) although I have much to add onto the database.

I tend to add Heavyweight bouts perhaps not listed in record books or "title" bouts whether they be eliminators or "regional" titles eg Larry Frazier v Lee Black (Pacific North West Title).

Acuna v Glavez wasn't for a "title" was it?

I'll leave this one to you guys with more literature to look into......I need more mags/Record books to help me I'm afraid.

Thanks guys,

I'll go ahead and change the result since both The Ring and especially Ballarati's Pugilato (who I would trust more than the Ring Record Book when it comes to fights in Europe) has Acuña the winner by KO 2.
