Your Kids are Watching- Worst Corner work

Post by Slapsie Maxie »

A question

Was Danny William's corener work the single most inept you have seen since they filled a condom with ice and placed it on Tyson's eye when Douglas was handing his ass to him on a plate?

In my view it was shameful. Too many people talking, no strategy, no plan B, no frickking clue

They are the ones who should take the blame. Not a good, honest, if outclassed pro

I don't disagree with that for a second. er, hence the word "outclassed"

Merely stating that I thought his corner was a fornicating shambles

YEs, that is very true...... still, maybe they were trying the old Teddy Atlas - Michael Moorer trick...still makes me cringe "Your son's on the phone and he wants to know why Daddy doesn't want to be Champion of the World"...

I mean how believable is that - if I was Moorer it would've just made me want to whack Atlas for being an ignorant lying twat...

Sterling McPherson is the pits. This guy jumped into the ring and remonstrated with a humane Mexican referee for saving Mike Dokes against Riddick Bowe in their world heavyweight title fight some years ago. McPherson wanted his man Dokes, wobbling every time he got hit, to take yet more punishment. It was horrible.
The reason I mention this is because Danny Williams should have been pulled out by his corner well before the finish in my opinion. But with McPherson in there, that was never going to happen. Jimmy Mac and Terry Stewart looked intimidated by his presence.
Who allowed this scumbag into Williams' corner? Crazy.
It's been a bad weekend for boxing all round. On Friday night, we nearly had a fatality when Mark Brookes suffered bleeding on the brain during his fight with Peter Haymer and underwent emergency surgery afterwards.
Then on Saturday, Micky Vann allowed Ricky Hatton to use 36-year-old Ray Oliveira as a human punchbag in the ninth round, when the fight should clearly have been stopped.
A round later, Oliveira made the sensible decision to pull himself out.
On the same night in America, Demarcus Corley outpointed Darryl Tyson in a 10-rounder. The world class Corley floored Tyson in third and won every round on the scorecards.
Tyson had fought six times in eight years. He is 44.

Generally a good an accurate post, although I think we will agree to disagree on the Hatton vs Oliveria stoppage - I thought it was sound. Might have been a case for a compasionate stoppage a few rounds before the ninth, but I thought it was okay.

Amazingly Coreley vs Tyson was on online PPV - I huge mismatch.

some refs cannot win if mickey vann had stopped the fight everyone would be slatting him :TU: there was no reason to stop the fight anyway,ro although outclassed did not look in any severe danger and was throwing plenty of leather himself.what do you suggest then every time a fighter gets hit the ref stops it?imo the hatton fight was a entertaining bout :TU:

Well I agree, the Dokes fight was a horror show - same guy was it? Dokes almost had his head taken off, surprised he lived to tell the tale even...

As for Vann - well he should've taken the first opp to stop the fight he could - ie the knockdown. Instead, he started counting the poor guy out.

Vann's usual tactic is to ask "what's your name?!" Thank Christ the too brave Ray saw better of it.

I mean, how many boxers have you EVER seen not know their own name in the ring??? Daft question.

Who took the more punishment Sat night i wonder - Oliviera or Danny? Close call................

Same guy was in Botha's corner against Moorer.

He was a cock on Saturday night. Almost reminiscent of the guys in McClellan's corener against Benn, who gave it all the 'go out and die' chats.

Williams corner just seemed to completely lose it big time after the 1st round... the corner was total chaos!... had it been just Jim Mcdonnel in there talking to Danny he would have been far better off and I think the fight would probably have been stopped earlier... but jim seemed to have lost control of the corner!... it was him and that arsehole each shouting into one of Williams ears! he was probably relieved to escape them at the begining of every round!.... seriously though it was the worst corner work I've seen since Paul Ingles tragic last fight and also reminded me about Mcguigan vs Cruz!.
I had picked Williams to win but he never got going and Vitali fought a perfect fight.... give him credit he 's improved a lot since he based himself in America.... Danny would be wise to retire now.

I think that the onus fell on Oliveira's corner

Danny's corner was an absolute shambles, screaming and shouting at a man who is being pummelled like that isn't really much help.

At the end of the first round, Danny needed to be calmed down and given some idea of what to do to avoid getting hit again and again like that.

I suppose they were just trying to gee him up, but Danny's only hope was to land a wild haymakjer

Funnily enough, I was about to give Danny round 3 when he eat that left hook at the end of the round.

I don't think on reflection that Danny could have won, I just don't think he has the right set of skills. The head movement just didn't happen, and I doubt Danny would have been fleet of foot enough to attempt Tyson's peekaboo style.

I don't think Danny wanted to quit in there, I honestly think he wanted to go out on his shield, and I think he deserves tremendous respect for showing the desire he did, it's what makes champions, it's just a shame he didn't have the tools at his disposal to match his desire.

How did this Sterling bloke get invited into Danny's corner? Where did he appear from - I though (as Danny kept on saying in interviews) it was just him and Jimmy Mac....

Just ahd a call from Sports Network, they'd heard about the post i've highlighted above. They know i post on here occasionally and asked if i'd pass on the following message.

"Bennie - are you Steve Connolly from Boxing News in disguise?

If you are, why do you hide behind an alias? If you feel as strongly as you do about Sterling and Mickey Vann then i suggest you write it in your column in Boxing News.I am sure then the people concerned will have the legal opportunity to consider their positions with your libelous commonts."

My take for all its worth? Once again someone gets vile insults directed at them on a forum. Why? for the way he works in a corner,it's hardly worthy of being called a 'scumbag' is it? the term scumbags should be saved for people that fiddle with kids or murder people don't ya think?

I just think you should have one voice and a voice thats talking sense and with authority, theres no need for all this OTT rubbish, it creates panic. ,

As if Danny wasnt panicked enough getitng the shit belted out of him. Thry know their fighter better than me but for my money you needed some calm in the face of a storm and what he got were three men all shouting various things none of them particualrly helpful.

Maybe they were nervous too, maybe the occasions got to them which would be ironic if thats the case when Danny had a history of doing so, I dont really know but it was pretty piss poor to listen to Im afraid. Thats if you could make out what anyone was saying. Sterling was shouting over them; mostly useless shit that was little more than trying to motivate williams. A calm head was needed NOT a cheerleader.
THATS MY OPINION SO SUE ME.

Im not saying it would have made any difference but one voice and one voice talking sense could only have helped in a dire situation.

The main thing was that the advice (that I could make out amid the screaming), seemed to consist of telling him not to quit.

I don't have it on tape sadly, but I don't recall there being much in the way of tactical advice, why, I don't know, but it did feel to me like Danny was just being sent out there

I think if Jimmy Mac had been left to it, he could have been more constructive, maybe not, but it did seem that the corner work was more panic inducing than anything else.

I think maybe there was a prevailing suggestion that Vitali would punch himself out, and I did myself think Danny was beginning to ride the storm in the 3rd, but then came the second knockdown which effectively ended his hopes.

I do indeed. Possibly though he was hired precisely for that purpose, to motivate Danny when things got rough, who knows?

If a Boxer needs motavating when fighting form the HW championship of the World then maybe, here lies the real problem.

Actually, that 'guy' was a top ten rated fighter in his day and knows his stuff.
