I daren't think what I would have been like if the internet and boxing forums like this one had been around when I was 17 years old - there would have been yards and yards of shite (about Frank Bruno, Najib Daho and Sibbo more than likely) - a more elequoent version of flint island probably.

Poor old Flint! That`s one fine mullet he has there.
Re: British Boxing TV Tragedy
Boxing needs to offer more than the occassional "big fight." Most boxing shows contain a main event and a poor undercard, mainly "prospects V journeymen/foreigners".
Even many of the "main events" are unispiring and somewhat unbalanced match ups.
Prizefighter , and similar style shows, are a move in the right direction but the reason people watch forumla one (as mentioned in the article) is that is IS a competition. The FA cup, the Olympics etc, are sporting contests.
Even shite like X Factor are entertaining contests.
Wrestling, British Wrestling, was good honest entertainment- nothing more, nothing less.
Boxing shows need to find the right level- either quality cards IN DEPTH with well know fighters, and keen match ups, the public can follow, or more or a "Contender" style novelty approach.

ESPN need to get there self in gear, i presume setanta got a shed load of viewers for there boxing coverage. so surely with ESPN's financial backing from the U.S they can make it work to the effect that setanta did without having to fold?

Re: British Boxing TV Tragedy
Who can blame the TV channels for not wasting their time with boxing any more? The sleazy promoters and unregulated sanctioning bodies have been shooting the game in the foot for years now and the sport is simply not as easy to follow or attractive as it was in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
The 90's spewed up new sanctioning body's and new divisions by the week and certain vile promoters have predictably abused this system for all its worth, selling crappy fighters as world champions and importing an endless line of bums to match their prospects with for oddly named belts that no one understands.
Since 2000 it's got increasingly out of hand, even hardcores like me don't have a clue what's going on most the time, I don't know who's the champion of what, I can't fathom how Amir Khan can have a world title belt, or how John Ruiz can fight for the WBA 'championship' for nine years, or how these gangsters can so unashamedly have two or three champs within one division within their own organisation??
It's a joke. It deserves to be off TV.

At the end of the day, TV can only cover the shows the promotors are putting on...
Also, consider how few people both to actually watch the who show at live events- most arrive late, leave early, just watch their mates etc.
In the first instance, there must be something being promoted that people... actually want to watch.

Re: British Boxing TV Tragedy
Pretty good article, but once again the use of the word "tragedy" is completely unjustified.
A tragedy is when somebody dies. When Darren Sutherland killed himself it was a tragedy, but when a minority sport is struggling for TV exposure it certainly isn't a tragedy, far from it.
First thing they tell you at Journalism school, although people should be smart enough not to use that term in the wrong sense.
Sorry to be critical, but its constructive feedback and something the lad needs to learn
