Future Big Fights in Ireland

Post by Autobarn »

Irish boxers seem to go down well not only domestically but in England and even America. Obviously, being Irish does not harm your marketability if you have an exciitng style, some charisma or are simply a winner. A worst case example is John Duddy - he's not a terribly good fighter, but ppl seem to like him. On t'other end, Barry McGuigan gave British boxing perhaps its greatest night in the past 25 years, when he beat Pedroza in that great fight/event. Sometimes we hear that British fighters we've followed the careers of are a bit Irish. i.e. Jamie Moore, who fought for an Irish title about a year ago. And Matthew Macklin, who went from Manchester Mexican, to Brummie, to popular Irishman - and back again.

With Bernard Dunne's career uncertain after gruelling win over Codoba and subsequent loss to little Poonsawat, what will be the next big fights?

Reckon a fight with Lee or Duddy would be the way for Matthew Macklin or Jamie Moore to have a big fight in a big arena. Perhaps - if both men bring enough to the table, i.e. a world title each - Moore and Macklin might fight each other in Ireland this time, if a lucrative rematch can ever be put together?

Thoughts on the above? What other big fights could happen? I think a lot of ppl might say Dunne v Munroe, but I can't see Dunne making 122 ever again.

Reckon the Big One has gone by:

Bernard Dunne v Israel Vazquez.

I wonder if they could have persuaded Vazquez to come to Ireland.

Dead in the water now: Vazquez struggled to beat a journeyman last time out, and Dunne got stopped by Thai challenger Poonsawat obviously.

Wonder what it would take for Duddy to fight Moore - no less than a world title, surely - and for Lee to fight Macklin - EBU belt enough??

Is it possible that Andy Lee could use his rangy fencing style to become perhaps the Wlad K of the heavyweight - sharpshooting from distance, clinching up close, to perhaps win a world title with an amateur style?

I am not so sure the big one of dunne and Vasquez is completely gone.

I am still holding on to the hope of Dunne making a comeback and getting a couple of decent wins again and angling for a finale for Vasquez. Vasquez is on record as saying he would like the fight, but since the Dunne's loss to Poonsawat, he would need a couple of wins to get his name up there again.

If Rogan wins against Sexton, then this sets up a British Title fight with Williams. After that, who knows, anything can happen at heavyweight as there is a dearth of talent.

I am still holding out hope that Sinclair can make one last surge to get a shot at some big fights, he certainly has the appetite to give it one last shot, and I have always thought he had the talent to win a world title.

I think with careful matchmaking Dunne can achieve something at Featherweight. IBF Champion Cristobal Cruz is vulnerable, very beatable and isn't a big a puncher as his record suggests. A fight which could push Dunne towards Cruz is a All-Irish fight against Martin Lindsey who is rated No.6 by the IBF. Dunne will have to travel if he wants to salvage his career, no more sell out O2 Arenas for the time being.

Hopefully Duddy-Chavez Jr will happen next year, a battle of two over-rated fighters. Can see Duddy getting a decision in that fight but he isn't close to World level and gets hammered by any Middleweight or Light Middleweight Champions.

Andy Lee is still young and has plenty of flaws but can do something at Middleweight. I've said it before but he really needs to get rid of Manny Steward in order to progress, he has the raw materials! Dont think fighting Macklin would be a good call at this stage in his career because Macklin beats him IMO.

I think Paul McCloskey offers the next big Fight Night in Ireland. He is very under-rated in my opinion and would love to see him against Khan but Warren wont let that happen. McCloskey is good enough to reach World Title level. Looking forward to see him agaisnt M'Baye on November 6th, dangerous opponent but a chance for McCloskey to show how good he is and cant see anything but a McCloskey UD win.

On a European level, I can see Eddie and Pajo Hyland going places. Imagine the two Hylands in European title fights on the same night in the O2!

Not sure what Dunne can do now. He looked like his punch resistence is shot. Perhaps the Cordoba fight ruined him. Or maybe he can do something at a higher weight, who knows.

I think all the action is at light middle and middle. I definitely think Lee can do something. He seems like he is mastering the long range boxing, and he can be effective in that upright, slightly repetitive, sometimes punishing way. He has some nice straight and sharp punches. I just wished there was more of an adventurous learning curve after the Vera fight.

I do reckon Matthew Macklin and Jamie Moore could perhaps get bigger fights in bigger arenas, in Ireland. Wouldn't it be amazing if it was vs each other? Would love to see Macklin vs Lee - great style matchup - and Moore vs Duddy. Those would be great headliners, if they could be for world titles.
