UFC 103 vs Mayweather-Marquez (PPV Sales)

Post by liamlion »

Apologies if this has already been raised and answered...

But i remember prior to UFC 103 and Mayweather-Marquez on the 19th September there was a load of publicity about the events going head-to-head on PPV. Does anybody know what the outcome of the PPV figures were?

Very approximately, Mayweather-Marquez did in excess of 1 million, and the UFC about 400k.

Dana White was actually really complimentary about the number PBF did saying he was surprised and good luck to him. Though in the past few years Mayweather had really sold himself via Dancing with the Stars, WWE etc. He's one of the few personalities who still transcends the sport.I wonder what numbers Vitali-Arreola did? Not good I'm sure.

UFC 103 had none of the standout stars of the UFC and when they are averaging a PPV every 3 weeks you will not be getting big numbers everytime here is a breakdown of their last few events
UFC 100: 1.7 million
UFC 101: 1.05 million
UFC 102: 535,000
UFC 103: 450,000

Klitschko v Arreola with the 1st time free showing of Mayweather v Marquez got 2.124 million viewers

HAHA dont make me laugh with those UFC Figures....You got any actual evidence UFC did them? NO

A rule of thumb with UFC PPV is that you half what they officially say

UFC 100: 850,000
UFC 101: 550,000
UFC 102: 277,000
UFC 103: 225,000

Ask any MMA journalist whether they believe the official figures and they'll tell you the same in private, even Dave Metzler...if you dont believe me just Email him and ask him at: [email protected]

The Klit fight wasnt PPV though, I watched that 1 out there, sort of balanced out shelling out $50 for the Mayweather fight (not sure it should be called a fight actually)

Oh yeah it was on the standard HBO obviously, I wonder had that massive figure much to do with the Mexican/Latino backing for Arreola??

Even with the backing and with it being for a world title it still didn't qualify for PPV. On the whole I think there should be more free to view fights (though that in itself is a nonsense as you pay a subscription fee for HBO in the first place) and as the big UFC events are all PPV as standard over in the states it's the most logical way for boxing to increase it's popularity. :TU:

I'd say your on the money there. UFC doesn't need to officially post it's figures so they can be as selective as they like with what the actual facts are. Based on what they are paying their top fighters even if it is only half of what they say , then Zuffa will still be making a mint. Lesnar got 400K for his last fight I heard and he is the high roller at the moment. I'd say Arreola likely got double that for being beat up by Klitschko.

The wrestling Observer is indeed the best place to go for UFC news, but in all the conversations ive had with big Dave over the years, he has never indicated that UFC inflates its nymbers that much.

Its not like 93,000 for Wrestlemania 3.....
