New look Boxing Monthly

My January copy has just arrived in the post.

They've had a spruce up regarding the design - looks very good as far as I'm concerned. A big improvement, certainly.

20p dearer but they haven't had an increase in a while if memory serves me right.

Disagree big style there Ian, I was going to start a thread saying I hated the new design.

I like the mag and I liked it how it was. Content was still good, but I didn't like the new design at all. Far to many gaps, Titles filling a page and a have and little square boxes around the rankings.

Horrible.

I think it looks smart - much more modern and slick and it definitely needed it.

Carlos Hernandez thought a change was needed after his career best perofmance vs Morales - he was wrong. Sometimes a change is not needed. I just thought it looked cheap.

Yes but more importantly, has the writing got any better than the dogsh1t they have consistently churned out for years....

PS anyone know what happened to Uppercut? Seems to have totally disappeared....

Apart form Steve Dunce I think the writing is excellent - Graham Houston is one of the top two boxing writers in the world.

Haven't seen it yet - what's the new look then, nude fold out of Jane Couch??

The new look we take a little getting used to for me but then i've been getting the magazine since 1996 and can't remember a radical change of style before. Two things which I don't think they should have gotten rid of is the results pages and the letters pages. The results pages was particularly useful as it told me who fought in every particularly month but I guess now now all who need to do now is look on the internet.
Best writer for me is Ant Evans but I like Bunce too he seems a geniune good guy to me, Houston too is a good pro as is Jack Welsh.

The results page was excellent, it was better than here (sorry) in that for most of the results it would say the circumstances of the loss. I know you get it occasionally here, but a simple one word explanation would give you some indication of the fight (i.e. cuts). It was also easy to read as it was done country by country.

The letters page was good, I had two letter publicesed both about Eubank, one about the Thomspon fight (something like he got robbed) the other was about Eubank's brave effort vs Calzaghe (saying that he would take him in a rematch).

The thing that impressed me most was that I wrote a letter asking alot of questions after the first time I had bought the mag. Looking back it was quite clear that I didn't know a thing about the Politics side of the game and they must have been thinking "first time buyer". Anyway, I got a two paged reply answering all my points and counter arguing some of my opinions (i.e. Steve Robinsons' lowly world ranking). I thought it was a nice touch and it made me fork out on a subscription.

Well i am not entirely convinced about the new style but i am not complaining, i still love Boxing Monthly anyway

It takes some stick but is probably the best around at what it does IMO, i mean i have only read The Ring magazine a couple of times but i thought it was awful, way out of the date for the date it was issued and with no real substance...i know it is an institution for some people but i really didn't like it

ALL US boxing magazines are sh1t and so outdated with their results. I used to like them when I was younger though - don't know if I have grown out of them or they have got sh1tter.

The Ring used to be 'The Bible of Boxing' and used to report every result rond the world.....now that title has to be Boxing News' though.

Ant Evans is good enough - Farhood I can take or leave, but he's ok - I mean compared to someone like Jim Brady, the guy writes like Hemmingway.

But it's mainly Houston who holds the whole mag together - glad he's back as I missed his writing when he left BN back in the 80's.
BN used to have another fantastic writer back then: Tim Mo. Think he went on to win the booker prize once he left...

I meant Glyn Leach of course!!! But I agree with you about Jim Brady....surely the worst writer in any sport globally....

I often wonder if he has got a bet on with someone on the lines of what is the biggest load of sh1te boxing News are willing to print.....

If so, he must be making a lot of money...

It looks a lot better, Houston aside its still the same shit. The crossword is a load of old wank some of those clues are ridiculous.
