Boxing Hall Of Fame 2005.
Apparently these 45 fighters have been picked as possible inductees to the Boxing Hall Of Fame 2005. Out of the below fighters the four with the most votes will be inducted in 2005.
Know these are all fine fighters whom I would hate to be seen to critisize but I am struggeling to find 4 to put in.
The IBHOF is a wonderfull idea but I feel that it has now come to the point where four a year is way too much and to continue down this path will dilute the quality of the IBHOF in a big way, which would be a terrible shame. Maybe just one or two inductees per year would be better.
Horacio Accavallo
Joey Archer
Jose Becerra
Johnny Bratton
Jimmy Carruthers
Bobby Chacon
Jung-Koo Chang
Donald Curry
Hioyuki Ebihara
Tommy Farr
Tiger Jack Fox
Ceferino Garcia
Betulio Gonzalez
Yoko Gushiken
Carlos Hernandez
Rafael Herrera
Al Hostak
Harry Jeffra
Peter Kane
Cocoa Kid
Pone Kingpetch
Tippy Larkin
Jose Legra
Duilio Loi
Barry McGuigan
Ernesto Marcel
Lloyd Marshall
Freddie Mills
Brian Mitchell
Rinty Monaghan
Terry Norris
Masao Ohba

YIKES!
It is harder to select four to put in than it would have been in the past. Previously it was very hard to get in because of the competition. You are so right about the HOF becoming diluted. I feel you should be something special to get in.
If you put more living fighters in you get more chance of fans tuning up to the HOF weekend = more money. I wouldn't bet against the likes of Chacon, Norris, Curry and McGuigan (or 3/4 of that list) getting in.
I think it is a crime that some of the selections of the past few years made it in before Holman Williams or Cocoa Kid. I am also a big Lloyd Marshall fan and I think there is a good arguement for him over just about anyone else on the list.
Again, the likes of Qawi getting in before Williams, Marshall or Hardwick sucks. Speaking of these guys - where the hell is Eddie Booker? Look at the guys he beat before he had to retire at 26!
Hank Kaplan is on the selection commitee - I think he will vote for Cocoa Kid (he has before). I would love to see the guys I mentioned get in. I may even consider going back for the event after a couple of very dissapointing visits (read - less about the fans and more about the egos (and I'm not talking about the fighters themselves))

Am I correct in saying they choose four every year?
If this is so then I agree the exclusiveness of the present inductees will get watered down to include not just the very, very special boxers but also the popular boxers that most people will have heard of.
Four a year, how often does a boxer come along that really stands out as legend of the sport?
Perhaps only 3-4 every decade if we are lucky.
Four every year will diminish the outstanding fighters who will have made the list in the first place I feel.

4 a year isn't so bad. It's who ends up being those four (and who gets left out) that's the problem.tonyevs wrote:Am I correct in saying they choose four every year?

???
Talk about a shitty list, who is on the panel that decides these names. Where is Frank Klaus, or Mike O'Dowd, two guys who should have been inducted years ago, not even on the list while guys like Archer, Bratton, Farr, and others couldnt even have held their dirty laundry.
I guess I shouldnt be surprised. Ken Norton made it in. Next up will be Leon Spinks and George Chuvalo...

Ain't Ernesto Marcel has been elected already??? I think he was elected in 1999. As for the fighters on that list I will vote for:
Bobby Chacon, Hilario Zapata, Brian Mitchell, Myung Woo-Yuh, Donald Curry, Holman Williams, Dave Sands, LLoyd Marshall, Duilio Loi, Cocoa Kid, Rafael Herrera, and Jung Koo Chang.
These were excellent boxers to be inducted.

I would vote for Yoko Gushiken, Betulio Gonzalez, Holman Williams, maybe Donald Curry, maybe Bobby Chacon. It wouldn't surprise me if Chacon got in for sentimental reasons. A real crowd pleaser who is down on his luck these days. Does anyone know if Curry is out of prison? If he's still in, I don't think he'll get a furlough to go to Canastota for the weekend.
International Boxing Hall of Fame
My biggest beef with the International Boxing Hall of Fame is that there are a number of noted promoters, matchmakers, and managers who have incrediable credentials, but aren't being considered. I notice that many of the said figures were not from the East. They include Larry Foley, Jack Hurley, Tom McCarey, and Joe Waterman.
Another truly great boxer who isn't being considered is Bud Taylor!
If you think that I am paranoid about the East, remember that Jack Fiske,
the great boxing writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, was never chosen for the writers' award. Yet Fiske's column was the most widely circulated one of its day among boxing people and hardcore boxing fans in the United States for years! The secret of Jack Fiske was that he had more solid boxing scoops than anybody else. Fiske DID get the Jimmy Walker
Award for lifetime meritorious service, but he should have received several, if not more, boxing writers' awards.

2004
PAPA SARREAL REMEMBERED. Sunday, March 14, marked the ninth death anniversary of Lope "Papa" Sarreal, the "Grand Old Man of International Boxing" who is known in boxing circles as the father-in-law of the great Gabriel "Flash" Elorde.
In the history of Philippine professional boxing, Papa Sarreal was one of only a few Filipino fight promoters and managers who was showered with international acclaim. He was a wheeler-dealer of great ability, a tireless boxing man who traveled around the world, promoting championship fights, attending international conventions and meeting famous boxing personalities. In his lifetime, he produced 22 world champions headed no less by his famous son-in-law, Flash Elorde.
"Boxing is my life," Papa Sarreal once told PDI sportswriter Roy Luarca in an interview. Boxing also enabled Papa to give his wife and children Laura (widow of Flash Elorde), Lilia (married to a Chinese-American surgeon based in the United State) and international matchmaker Jun Sarreal a comfortable life.
Ted Carroll
Carroll has never been inducted. Anyone who has ever read the old THE RING magazines, for instance, will recognize the name of Ted Carroll. He contributed countless articulate columns and great cartoons for THE RING from the 1930s to the early 1970s. He also contributed to many other publications. The man contributed a lot to the sport of boxing and deserves his due.
