Andre 'the clincher' Dirrell

Post by whiskey »

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fztqCbOUiTY

Just an extremely biased highlight video i knocked up.

I like Andre, he has 'the goods' but don't know what to do with them.

One thing is undeniable, his excessive holding stank this fight out.

I think Jean Pascal earned himself about 50,000 new UK fans after his fight in Nottingham, I'd be surprised if Dirrell made 100 more.

Dirrell is a nice guy, but he needs to change his tactics from pot-shotting and holding, to actually standing in the middle of the ring and boxing his opponents. When he does do, he is a top top fighter. But his whinging, farting, and nagging to the ref instead of chomping down on his guard and letting his fists do the talking, left me a bit cold.

When he let them go, he had the better of Froch for spells and only has himself to blame for letting his big opportunity pass him by.

Can Hennessy get Froch v Kessler fight on a better channel than the other day? I not seen the fight yet so I can't comment on it until I see it!

Do you have to write the same thing in every post.

What are Hennesseys other options for broadcasting Frochs fights? ITV have pulled out of boxing, Sky bizarrely aren't interested. Personally I think Mick done well to get the fight Live on TV.

I agree with Gomez when he said Pascal endeared 1000's of fans with his warrior like performance, Dirrell stunk the place out with his timid performance. I hope Abraham sparks him out next fight, but I can see another 12 round bore draw

I will say it as I think it poor from Hennessy. I think Froch deserves better than being shown on some tinpot channel!

Fair enough, but I'll ask the same question again...What channel do you think Mick should have got him on? or do you expect BIG Mick to magic one from his bottom?

Depends on how much he is asking for the fight. I surprised he could not get it on sky. It will be interesting to see what he does for the next fight!

It is Hennessy's job to generate interest from TV companies and get Froch maximum exposure. In fairness Froch is a promoters dream, there can't be many fighters easier to promote.
Do you really think that any other promoter( perhaps not Adam Booth) who has such a fighter having guaranteed fights on a big stage and fail to get them TV

I disagree Coco, and I think Last night showed why.

Taylor vs Froch wasn't the classic people say it is..... it had a drama fuelled 12 round but before then it was quite dull.

Pascal vs Froch was a thriller, lets give Pascal some credit also... he took it to Carl.

Froch is a banger yes, and has big balls... two excellent qualities. But he is quite unorthdox, gangly and "ugly" to watch, with his low guard, back handed jabs and wide, slow, punches.

Gatti was as exciting as Froch, but he was also more orthodox, with a better punch technique and speed. He was "prettier" to watch.

Been having lots of debates about Froch with people, who have only seen his ITV fights, and they've mentioned how "ugly" his style is. And really for 23 of his last 24 rounds, he's struggled and its looked bad. He's shown limitations and he cannot be only a marketing dream "if the other fighters brings it". Gatti had a way to get negative boxers to bring it.... with Froch, if they don't, then the fight is dull.

I would say Froch is far more exciting and marketable than Cleverly, and all of his fights are on the telly

in the interests of evenhandedness, gomez, i presume you will put a little youtube tribute to Froch up there as well, we can have 'punching thin air the Carl Froch way', 'everything i learned about footwork i learned from watching polar bears on Discovery channel', and my personal favourite 'frustrated by a quick-moving opponent? plod round the ring after him and hit him with little more than a steely glare that should do the trick'

You're Video does the opposite and only solidifies in my mind that Dirrel won the fight pretty handily with his superior skills and speed.

Also I'd say half of the Clinches in that video were due to Froch missing with his punches and then falling into Dirrel, its just a natural reaction to hold you're opponent when that happens.

The clinches gave Froch the only opportunity of hitting him, Dirrell won that fight easily on my scorecard.

@eraserhead I long stopped listening to Gomez when it comes to Carl. His views are in a galaxy far far beyond nuthuggery but from what I have gathered Flop is his proper good friend. Round their place for Sunday roast/godfather to the kids type friend. I know he looks after Carl's website

How many of us could be truly even-handed in the same circumstances?

Agreed, Dirrell did himself a disservice, and had he stood his ground a bit more, and landed some of the shots he did in the last third earlier in the fight, he would have probably gotten the nod. As it was the judges penalised him for not engaging, even though Froch hardly laid a glove on him.

I think he lost points for nagativity (holding/falling over) and didnt win the rounds by enough, he certainly won the rounds but could have done with winning them more emphatically. You could argue even if he did that the fix would have been in

My point is, the only recognised TV company that are showing boxing is Sky, so if Sky aren't interested (for whatever reasons) then what can Mick do?

IMO he could either drop his price and virtually give the fight to Sky, which doesn't make financial sense (to me anyway) or he could have gone down the route he has done. I suppose it comes down to Micks decision on which approach will make the most wonga. Whilst it would have suited the Victor Meldrews of the board for the fight to be shown on Sky at a drop down price I'm guessing that Mick thought he could generate more money by going onto PrimeTime PPV.

Other than the above I'm struggling to come up with any other realistic options for getting Froch's Super 6 fights aired

back to dirrell - only roy jones and fliyd mayweather can dominate in a negative way. dirrell will go the way of derrick gainer if he's not careful. he'll finish out his career answering the boxingtalk mail bag. opportunities like super 6 are there to showcase skills, not to run away.

dirrell may have given froch better opportunities to land, if he'd tried a bit earlier. anyway, anyone can be outboxed on the wrong night. some feel froch was, some feel dirrell basically made it a stalemate and gave away the fight. one thing is sure, super 6 doesn't need dirrell if he's going to keep boxing like that.

No the reason is ITV have bailed out BEFORE the end of a contract, and Sky are full up with their "exclusive" deals.

Yes, hindsight is wonderful.... but then would Mick have delivered the big fights for Froch if they were restricted to Sky's budget - Friday night only guys. It will be interesting when and where Cleverly will get his world title fight. Me thinks on a Khan undercard, and defences on Friday againat British title opponents.

Sure, maybe Hennessy didn't have a crystal ball when he signed the ITV deal. But then I think most promoters would have signed the same deal.
