What are the chances of a Welterweight SuperSix Tournament?

Post by ALI »

Its a long shot, but boy would this be the tournament to put boxing right back on the mainstream map.

I'm sure most people's 'six' would look like this:

Mayweather, Pacquio, Mosley, Cotto, Margarito, Berto

But the 147lb division is so deep with talent right now there's a multitude of gap fillers should the likes of Mayweather not want any part of it. Clottey, Judah, Collazo are all there, Bradley could be brought up from light-welter, Williams could be brought down from light-middle, the possabilites are endless!

Very difficult to see Mayweather accepting any part of it, and its unlikely Pacquio's advisers would want him in it. By my gut feeling tells me the rest could very well be up for it.

And if the rest were to be in it, Pretty Boy Floyd would be left out in the cold, or faced with only one option, fight Pacquio :DD

I guess there are too many snags though, getting Mayweather and Pacquio involved being the biggest two, then there's Showtime, they probably dont want to start another tournament until this ones done and dusted. Nothing wrong with daydreaming though is there?

A great idea but too many egos in that proposed line up.

Low

I really doubt Mayweather would do it not enough money for the risk involved and they would all want the higher percentage of the purses. I would love it too happen but doubt it will :witzend:

@bomber, you may yet be proven right on this one

My opinion is that for the super6 to work there can't be any brutal knockouts, or should I say any more brutal knockouts

You need close competive losses where the loser has a sense of injustice ' ifithadntofbeenforthebentjudges' line of thinking

Dumb logic but thats boxing for you

A lightweight one, I'd pay to watch that, sounds thrilling -- Soto, Valero, Guzman, Funeka, Lamont Pearson (is that his name? Unbeaten Yank prospect), maybe get Prescott in too.

A welter one, as Banjo says, would never happen. You'd have to pay Mayweather about four hundred million dollars & get everyone else to fight with their gloves tied together before he accepted that.

But I think these tournaments are catching the public notice. My non-boxing friends noticed Prizefighter this time & a couple mentioned the Froch fight at the weekend too.
