Ian Millarvie Turns Professional With Tommy Gilmour

Ian Millarvie Turns Professional With Tommy Gilmour
Scotland's Super Heavyweight Amateur Champion, Ian Millarvie, has turned professional with after several years of talk about him making the move from the glory to the paid ranks of boxing. Tommy Gilmour is the lucky fellow to get his signature.

The 23 year old six foot six man mountain from Hamilton is expected to make a big impact on the British heavyweight scene - last year boxing pundit Steve Bunce called him "the most talked about heavyweight in British amateur boxing since Frank Bruno in 1980" and with very good reason.

be intresting to c how the big chap gets on put him in with mcdermott first fight he will ko him :TU:

A Scottish heavyweight prospect.!! lets hope he really does do well. it will be about time. its a good move to go with gilmour, he really cares about his fighters and manages them well bringing them through in fights where they actually get experience which benefits the, unlike certain promoters/managers <cough allegedly cough> who insist upon padding their 'prospects'.

However I never really take too much notice of what Bunce says really! but good luck to Ian!!

Millarvie is a good guy... spent a lot of time down in london the last few years training at repton and even sparring with Danny Williams.

Really big guy with light feet and fast hands...... heart and chin have yet to be tested though

Ken Shaw 1940\'s, I\'m sure was the last Scottish \'heavyweight\' of good quality.

He was the Scottish heavyweight Champion and consistently ranked No.1 or No.2 British \'heavyweight\' Contender, behind Champions Bruce Woodcock and Freddie Mills the light-heavy cum heavyweight.

Shaw fought both Woodcock and Mills twice each losing all 4 fights and was later again deprived of a title match after being beaten by heavyweight Jack Gardner.

Ken Shaw was a good rugged fighter, he lost both his matches with Mills owing to cuts, he went to the U.S in 47 (I think) and won all 3 fights there, and he \'thawrted\' the Scot\'s \'middleweight\' cum light-heavy Bert Gilroy twice as Gilroy attempted to hold the TREBLE, middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight Scottish titles all at once.

Gilroy of course Scotland\'s true greatest \'big-man\', and a few years later Chic Calderwood, although Calderwood\'s period was not quite the same calibre as Gilroy and Ken Shaw\'s competition.

I hope young Millarvie will prove to be as good a prospect as the fore mentioned especially for Bert\'s sake not only as another Scottish \'bigman\' but under the same \"Gilmour\" management, as Bert was with Tommy Sr.

In this day and age if Millarvie proves worthy there\'s no real reason he shouldn\'t get his title shot... \"Goin\' yourself son!\"

Is that a poem you just wrote, if it is, it's very good, though the verse structure is highly unorthodox, perhaps an archaic hebrew form?

IAN Millarvie, Scotland’s heavyweight boxing prospect, will travel to New York next week to test himself against some of America’s leading big men as he prepares to showcase his skills in front of his home public for the first time.

The 24-year-old from Hamilton will share top billing on new promoter Chris Gilmour’s maiden show at the Motherwell Civic Centre on 27 May. It is six-time Scottish amateur champion Millarvie’s third fight since turning professional in January.

Millarvie, who hopes to become the first Scot to win the British heavyweight title, is serious about his ambitions and will spend three weeks at the Catskill Mountains gym of celebrated New York manager Stan Hoffman, where he will spar with boxers of the calibre of the world ranked Monte Barrett.

"It’s important to get that kind of sparring and experience to progress as a fighter," said Millarvie. "When I was in London as an amateur, I used to spar with Danny Williams and I learned a lot from it. Going to America is another step up and one I’m looking forward to."

Motherwell light-welterweight Barry Morrison, unbeaten in nine professional fights, challenges Gary Reid of Birmingham for the British Masters title in the joint top of the bill contest

IMO, Lets scrap the Scotish and Welsh titles and work towards making the Celtic title more meaningful.
