Low key Dan is responsible for Herrera's name being added to the 2009 WBHOF ballot. The result is a new Hall of Famer.

Rudy De Leon was commander of the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division when he decided to try to curb street-gang problems by starting a boxing club for youths in the basement of the Boyle Heights police station.
It was a radical notion in 1973, he later recalled, but the athletic pursuit had helped shape his teenage years. As one of the city's first Latino police captains -- and an amateur boxer -- he "just knew" that the predominantly Latino community served by the Eastside station would benefit as well.
The boxing program grew into the Hollenbeck Youth Center, which De Leon helped establish in the late 1970s in an old police station. Greatly expanded by 1998, the center has been credited with helping thousands of at-risk youths through an extensive array of programs and activities.
De Leon died Monday at a care facility in Rancho Palos Verdes of complications related to Alzheimer's disease, his family said. He was 85.
After serving in the Navy during World War II, De Leon was working in a bakery when he read an article in The Times about athletes who had become Los Angeles Police Department officers.
"All the athletes I knew were good guys," De Leon told The Times in 1994, "so I went for it."
When De Leon entered the police academy in 1947, he was one of only three minority students in a class of 135, according to a 2003 Los Angeles Police Historical Society newsletter.
As a rookie, he was assigned to what was then a new detail -- an anti-gang unit -- and worked mainly in the Chavez Ravine area.
By 1970, De Leon was the commander of Hollenbeck and had "the desire to do something for the community," said Daniel Hernandez, executive director of the youth center. "Because of Rudy's passion for boxing, he allowed his officers to become more active in the community, to share and exert their energies . . . for the kids."
One of the local youths who benefited from De Leon's boxing program was Paul Gonzales, who occasionally sneaked into the station's back door for a boxing lesson and later won a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Rudolph Vincent De Leon was born March 31, 1924, at home in Watts to Jesus and Ermila, immigrants from Mexico.
Growing up in Los Angeles, De Leon sold his mother's homemade tamales door-to-door with his two brothers. He also had two sisters.
Playing on the street, he learned to box and engaged in his first amateur fight when he was about 16.
"My dad always attributed boxing to helping him. He was somewhat shy, but boxing helped build his confidence, and he always believed that it could help others," said his son, Rudy De Leon II, who serves in the LAPD's mounted unit.
In the Navy, the senior De Leon continued to box and was a pharmacist's mate in Guam. He also provided healthcare aboard a destroyer escort.
When he was a police officer, he taught criminal justice at a number of area colleges. He credited teaching with making it easier for him to pass the exams that helped advance his LAPD career.
Stan Nelson, a retired LAPD detective, told The Times that De Leon "was so charismatic that people who worked for him couldn't help but strive for a higher level of professionalism."
After retiring from the LAPD in 1978, De Leon served on the state Board of Prison Terms and in the 1980s was special assistant to then-state Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp.
In 1994, he became the first ombudsman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, troubleshooting and investigating complaints against the department until 2002.
A marathon runner since the early 1960s, De Leon ran his 81st and final marathon when he was 77.
He lived much of his life in Torrance and Lomita with his wife of 59 years, Helen. She died in 2005.
In addition to his son, De Leon is survived by three other children, Cynthia, Regina and Steven; three siblings, Gloria, Jesse and Manual; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Margaret Mary Church, 25511 Eshelman Ave., Lomita.

I looked up his record as I didnt know much about him.
Rog mentioned something about Gil claiming he was robbed in 71. Rick you also mentioned he says he was robbed vs Mando.
So...I was thinking maybe it was a close dec. or something. The record says the referee shut it down after round five.
No close dec. Its funny how in boxing, perhaps more then any endeavor in the world, revisionist history finds a home.

Yeah, Brian, Armando pretty much beat him up. He was in way over his head that night, any night with Muniz.
But he's lucky to be with us. After he quit boxing, he was shot in the face, and so I credit him for still standing.
I remember when he and I were stablemates briefly. At the time, Suey Welch got him a room at the Elks Club. where George Parnassus had his office.
He tried to encourage me to take a room there too. It was like this old persons hotel, a massive monolithic building across from MacArthur Park.
I told Gil I was comfortable in my apartment and that the Elks Building had too many cock roaches for me. He just wanted a partner in crime.
We had a silent manager (no contract) and Suey Welch was just a front. The silent mgr. bought Gil & I both new cars. Gil got a '70 Plymouth Super Bee, and I was given a '70 Mach I Mustang. Gil's trainer, Cannonball Green, was given an orange Dodge Duster. The silent partner was an auto wholesaler so we all benefitted from that.
Man, that was in 1971.

Nice cars Rick.
But, I think you made the right move staying in your apartment and not moving into the Elks Building.
They did almost the exact set up for James "Quick " Tillis when he moved to Chicago from Tulsa Oklahoma to start his career.
His manager put him up in the old Lincoln Hotel right across from Lincoln Park on Chicagos north side.
I think there were a few other fighters living in there as well.
My cutman lived in there also . His name was Laurie Meyer. He was a good old guy. Passed on a few years ago.
There is that story about Tillis. When he got to Chicago, he was downtown and walking to catch a bus or train with his one big bag of luggage.All his belongings. He stopped to look up at The Sears Tower and he put his bag down. When he bent back down to get the suitcase, it was long gone.

Gaspar Ortega was sitting in the lobby. There were people around,but like I said, he was by himself.
"Hola Gaspar.Como estas?"I asked the former welterweight fighter.
Gaspar grew up in Tijuana in Colonia Morelos. i used to live down the hill in Canon Jhonson. There wasn't much difference. Old barrios near the center of town. Gaspar smiled hesitantly. My wife came over .She sat next to him. They always had a lot to say about Tijuana. Always the conversation went on for a long time between the two of them.
"Hola senora,"said Gaspar smiling."Como estas?"
Gaspar sat up in his chair.
"Oh bien ,"answered my wife. "Y tu?"
I don't know how Gaspar got his nickname Indio. Indio means Indian in Spanish. I think I asked him once,but forgot. But I think Gaspar had a lot of Indian in him because he acted like one in a sense. He didn't say much. He was kind of quiet like an Indian.
"Where's your wife amigo?"I asked.
Gaspar became figety.
"I don't know. She's in a hospital. They clean her blood today,but I don't know where she is."
Gaspar was speaking very fast and shifting his eyes.
"How will she get back to the hotel?"
"I don't know. I hope in a cab maybe."
Gaspar leaned over to my wife. They began conversing. I couldn't catch what they were talking about. Gaspar was talking directly to my wife .
I wandered around the lobby. I saw Dan Hanley and his father,"Pops". It was good to see them again. We talked about fighters. The Banquet. We talked about Chicago. After a while my wife walked up to me.Gaspar was right behind her.
"You hungry?"she asked.
"Sure.Where do you want to go?"
"There's a Carl's Jr. por la esquina."
"Gaspar,you want to join us?"
"Yes ,"said the old fighter. "Yes. Very much. Thank you."
We walked to the corner to where the Carl's Jr. was. I walked ahead of Gaspar and my wife. I turned around once, Gaspar was laughing.
I guess Gaspar had never been to Carl's Jr. He asked what kind of food was served. My wife told him "hamberguesas". She said she would order for him. I told my wife I wanted a chicken sandwich.
Gaspar and I sat in a booth while my wife was at the counter ordering. My wife insisted paying.Gaspar and I didn't say much.
My wife came over with two hamburger meals and my chicken sandwich. She reached in her purse and unwrapped some tin foil. There were dried chile peppers inside. Gaspar began laughing.
"I bring my chiles all the time,"she said. "The chiles here not too hot."
Gaspar was shaking his head laughing still.
After eating we walked back to the hotel. My wife and Gaspar sat in the lobby talking. I roamed around some more. I looked to where they were sitting and Gaspar was gone. I asked my wife where he had gone and she told me he got a call from his wife that she was returning to the hotel in a cab.
"He was worried about his wife?"I asked my wife the obvious.
"Oh yes. He worried. But she OK now."
Later in the afternoon I saw Gaspar enter the lobby with his wife. She was dressed elegantly. Gaspar introduced her to us. Gaspar saw Carlos Ortiz,the former lightweight champ,and walked over to him. My wife and Mrs .Ortega were chatting at a table .They talked a very long time. Mrs.Ortega did most of the talking. My wife seemed very interested.
They were still talking when Gaspar rejoined his wife. I joined them too. Mrs.Ortega did most of the talking. She told us of how she was raised in New York near Central Park. She told us she was Puerto Rican. She said that Gaspar doesn't talk much.
"That's because he's puro Mexicano,"I said with a wink. "Besides,you're Puerto Rican. Puerto Ricans like to talk."
Gaspar,I caught out of the corner of my eye. My comment was directed towards him really. He shook his head and laughed loudly.
"That's right. "he said .
Everyone got a laugh out of that.

Hey guys, finally have a chance to sit down and write. What a weekend! Got Pops back to his place about 10:30 Chicago time last night and all he could do was talk about what a great time and everyone being the nicest people he's met. He's not wrong, you guys are the best. It was a real thrill finally meeting Frank and Connie. I was in an elevator with the doors beginning to close when I spotted him. Everyone in the elevator turned to me with shock when I yelled out, "Hey, Frankieeeeeeee!" What the f***, I'm from Chicago, what did they expect? Rog, Maria, Randy, Jeri and Ed were absolutely the best. Ricardo, my brother, say no more! You and Monica are total soul mates. Rodolfo and Barb, thanks for that lift to the airport. The people I have met through this message board and through the Hall of Fame have no peers. Brian, hope you're feeling better, you were missed.

That was a group effort, Rick. Remember how long it took for us and you in particular to get his record changed from that mis-leading 20-2 to his correct and impressive record? BTW, showed that picture above to my wife this morning and she said in her very 'meek' Belfast accent, "What the hell have you got on? That shirt makes you look like a jumbo!" (I toned that one down, it was not so complimentary the way she said it). I said to her that it didn't look bad when I put it on, but, my God, it does look like I just gained about 30 pounds.
