OT. Olivers Gym in Salford

Post by tonyevs »

Can anybody help me.

I know a guy who claims to have done/been/got everything. You know, if somebody says they are a nurse - well he is a brain surgeon .. if somebody saw a UFO .. he was the one flying it :witzend:

His latest story time is that he fought out of Olivers Gym in Salford in 1995.
Was Olivers gym open then? (I thought he was fighting himself then?) .. or was anybody there then?

Much thanks.

I have no doubt he is talking his usual bollox.
The guy would have to be 126yrs old atleast to have done the things he has in the past claimed: internationally represented Scotland and Wales at karate and handgliding .. RAF mountain recue climber .. so many more I could mention
He obviously watched jamie Moore fight Friday on Sky sports ... and saturday morning remembered he also boxed out of Olivers gym in Salford.

But he is black so if he looks 37 then he is most likely in his 40 plus. We age very well..

Oliver and Humphrey Harrison both did Thai boxing (think it was with Master Sken), as well as conventional boxing. Carl Thompson was another one with a background in Thai.
I'm sure I remember an interview with Oliver in either Combat magazine or Martial Arts Illustrated where he talked about his 'mixed' background and said he could hold his own at British level in conventional boxing so if he was allowed to use his Thai skills in the ring he'd be able to defeat all the top boxers.
I wonder why he switched over to conventional boxing? Probably just driven by commercial realities... would be interesting to get his take on MMA having his background...

From memory think he opened it about 95 to be honest. I went a few years after that. Just ask your mate what the boozer near the gym is called and let me know what he says and i'll tell you if he's bullshitting mate. Sounds like he is though

Ask him to name the amateur boxing gym near Olivers. The old name not the new one (arrow, now bridgewater). Or ask him how people without cars used to get home and see what he says.

Oliver and Humphrey Harrison, together with Carl Thomson all did Thai Boxing with Master Sken. Oliver was a very sharp aggressive fighter with good hands esp later in his Thai Career. Humphrey was the cleverest Thai fighter around at the time, very calculated. Oliver won a Euro title and Humphrey a (diluted) world title. Carl I believe may also have won a world title in Thai before moving to pro boxing. Phil Nurse also turned pro with them around the same time, he now teaches Thai full time in america and I believe is one of the coaches on the latest series of Ultimate Fighter, or has featured on it. He George St Peirres stand up coach.

They all trained initially out of Phil Martins Champs Camp,

Oliver was teaching both Thai and pro boxing out of his gym to start with, I'm trying to work out exactly when he started. it could have been 94.

Oliver must be older than me, he had a good few fights when I started at 17, 27 years ago. He must be late 40's going on 50, still in great shape though.

Ask your mate if he knows what happened to Olivers hand that caused him to take along break

Slightly going off topic but I was in a fitness first gym today in Manchester and had a brief chat with Pat Barret who he says will be taking over the training with Thomas McDonagh at the Moston & Collyhurst which is good for the CollyHurst. Hughes is still the head coach and I might add he looked in decent shape.

Oliver has been training since the mid-90s easy I reckon. People just never noticed him until he got Jamie Moore and a few of Steve Wood's kids.

Before then he used to look after a lot of Nat Basso's journeymen. Nat must have died around 2000 and Oliver had been training kids then.

Also there was an amateur club there where loads of kids came and went so perhaps he might not be Billy Bullshit on this occasion

im not sure of the correct story but think oliver started with a gym in chorlton in the 90's then moved to the premises in salford sometime later. He taught thai and boxing but now concentrates on boxing even thou he does teach thai to juniors. Think when jamie moved there he was the only fighter at that time but had worked with other pro fighters/amateur previous.

Brian Hughes is winding down a bit now. Can't blame him, he's nearly 70.
