Andre Berto
Andre Berto
I have somehow managed to miss this guy's rise, and only checked him out when I saw he's got a bout v Mosely coming up in January.
This video makes him look awsome: brilliant range of punched, especially a fantastic uppercut, and the speed of a demon.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfKE9VSQMPM
I understand these highlight vids make fighters look better than they are... Does anyone know much about him, and how well he is regarded in the US?
I would have posted this in the Current Scene forum, but I don't know the value of any of the posters in there.

Re: Andre Berto
he did seem an irresistable package - speed, power, movement.
but when they stepped him up he was almsot stopped by cosme rivera, a dangerous fringe contender. berto showed plenty to rally and to win.
he also showed fighting spirit in another cracking war, vs luis collazo. thing is, most ppl think collazo won it. i had berto winning.
since then he's been fighting smaller men moving up, like urango, and not looking exactly super.
he gets opportunities because his promoter used to run HBO's boxing program. otherwise, all of his fights would probably be on showtime (the better ones) and ESPN.
let's see what happens vs mosley.

Re: Andre Berto
hes a very good up and coming fighter , though i dont rate his chances against the likes of mosely ......YET , maybe this fight will be too soon for him but he is good enough to pull off a surprise . it will be a huge boost to his career if he wins , as it would be for anyone really

Re: Andre Berto
To complement a point I made in the Kessler thread (sort of), people tend to get excited about 'flashy'/'slick' fighters, which Berto certainly looked on his way up. But as Autobarn says, Rivera put him down reasonably heavily with one shot in their fight, and this is after Zab Judah took Rivera out with one (beautifully timed) shot a few fights previously.
Since then he's struggled with Collazo and beaten Urango. All I'll say is that the (smaller) Ricky Hatton didn't exactly get showered with praise for that. For what it's worth, I think Berto is a good fighter, who can improve, but was flattered on the way up, when his speed was more apparent.

Re: Andre Berto
he's good he just shouldnt be a champ just yet he is around collazo level which is fringe contender (at this point in his career) and is about 4 or 5 fights from being at being a major headlining fighter

Re: Andre Berto
He will lose to Mosley. No question whatsoever. God I hope the bookies make Berto the favourite
Re: Andre Berto
to his credit though, rivera did almost beat joel julio.states wrote:To complement a point I made in the Kessler thread (sort of), people tend to get excited about 'flashy'/'slick' fighters, which Berto certainly looked on his way up. Re: Andre Berto
i think he should have rematched collazo. unfinished business, sanctioning body wants it, and a great fight.Adamj1987 wrote:he's good he just shouldnt be a champ just yet he is around collazo level which is fringe contender (at this point in his career) and is about 4 or 5 fights from being at being a major headlining fighter
but he may have got mosley at the right time if it is happening.
Re: Andre Berto
There is that slight chance that msley has regressed. What is he now, 39? He was comprehensively outboxed and out fought by Mayorga until almost the final punch of the fight. If Berto was taking on Mayorga surely everyone would be saying Berto has fartoo much for the shopworn nicaraguan... you never know... as I learnt with a thud on Friday (no, im not bitter or devestated <sobs>)
Re: Andre Berto
It's right that Berto has got a title too early. His technique is sorely lacking and he is only just getting away with his freakish speed alone.
Mosley has tended to lose the plot when fighting bigger fighters (Winky/Mayorga) as he gives up speed to load up on every shot and try to match them for power. That was fixed for the Margarito fight so even a year on from that he'll know way too much for Berto.
I only bet on sure things so if Berto is the favourite i'm in.

Needs to drop down to 140.

indeed he has the height but his frame doesnt look big enough he just looks over muscledEmerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Needs to drop down to 140.

Check out his amateur fights for the US if you can find them. Moves like he's on PCP.
Re: Andre Berto
Couldnt see him cuting down 7lbs... dont know, but he looks set at the weight. He hasnt fought anywhere near 140 in the 6 years he's been pro, so I cant see him cvutting half a stone at this stage... amazing what a good hiding can do for you though, so just perhaps after Mosley* ?!
* Personally I think Berto will shock a few and pull out a decent performance.

Re: Andre Berto
Despite being short for a welterweight, he's too big to move down to light welterweight. Too much muscle, and to lose it would damage his punch resistance.
Berto really struggled with Collazo. It was a close fight that could have gone either way. Of course, there was only one way it was going to go.
I think Mosley should win, but at 38 every fight could be one too many.

Re: Andre Berto
It'll be a year since his last fight, and a staggering 17 years since he turned pro.

Crazy, isn't it? 21 years for Bernard Hopkins!Wales wrote:It'll be a year since his last fight, and a staggering 17 years since he turned pro.

Re: Andre Berto
i think Mosley too battlehardened and experienced in big fights. i have been calling for Shane to take this fight for about 18 months as I think it's a good matchup for him.
basically we have two fighters with very very similar physical skilllsets, but only one with (a) tried and tested punch resistance at the top level and (b) huge experience in elite level fights. Berto's youth sould mean he has that extra bit of snap and vigour than a 39 year old Mosley
the kind of opportunities Berto gave to Collazo, Shane would take greater advantage of, IMO.
i just think, barring some dramatic late-career derailment/ deterioration (been waiting on this from shane for years and evry other fight he seems to look a bit less than brilliant, but then follows it up with a much improved performance- which Shane will we get i wonder?) that Shane will take Berto into deep waters that he hasn't had much experience of (the Collazo fight would have been a great learning experience for Berto), and beat the dog out of him, or at the very least out-fight/ out-hustle/ out-craft Berto.

if Berto has shane teeing off on him like Luis was, i think we will be saying 'goodnight Nurse'

Re: Andre Berto
Berto's chin has been tested a bit. Reportedly down heavily against Rivera, and almost down against Collazo (which he might blame on balance, but he was definitely stunned).Counter-puncher wrote:i think Mosley too battlehardened and experienced in big fights. i have been calling for Shane to take this fight for about 18 months as I think it's a good matchup for him.

Re: Andre Berto
aye- his chin's been tested a 'bit' is right but its as far as you can go. and Collazo isn't the kind of explosive puncher shane is. can't deliver a real power punch as quickly. Berto is in greater jeopardy for the whole 36 minutes this fight is going on if it goes that long
by the way rix if i was making a cheeky type prediction it would be Berto doimnates much of the fight, shane looks awful for long periods like vs Mayorga, KTFO's berto late to come from behind.

Re: Andre Berto
Yeah, that's why I was salivating at the prospect of this fight when Berto had just won the title. The more time that passes, though, the more chance Berto has of winning. I could see Berto getting knocked down early but then rallying to win/lose a close decision.Counter-puncher wrote:aye- his chin's been tested a 'bit' is right but its as far as you can go. and Collazo isn't the kind of explosive puncher shane is. can't deliver a real power punch as quickly. Shane blamed the Mayorga performance on being in the wrong weight class.

oh, agreed 100% 12-18 months ago i have no doubt that shane not just beats Berto but smashes him the fook up
now, much more level playing field IMO
