Nicky Booth off the rails again...
Nicky Booth is spending Christmas back behind bars.
The former British and Commonwealth bantamweight champion was arrested yesterday for alleged criminal damage after his mother called police.
"He's gone off the rails again," she claimed. "I don't want him here."
She also alleged he had breached his bail by taking off his electronic tag.
Booth, a recovering crack cocaine addict, was sentenced to two years earlier this year after admitting burglary and theft.
He was released on parole last month after being fitted with an electronic tag.
Police said: "A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly causing criminal damage and is being questioned by police."
He remains in police custody.
Promoter Matt Scriven, who had hoped to resurrect Booth's boxing career, said it was a terrible shame.
"He just found out he wouldn't be allowed to box until April 2006," he said.
"I think it tipped him over the edge."

I've never been a fan of the guy's attitude, but you gotta feel a little sorry for him. He's starting to understand what his mistakes have actually taken away from him.
The things that makes this an 'abyss' is that one of the easiest ways to survive in such a situation is to return to the 'mistakes'.
I reckon it takes more of a man than Mr Booth to get himself out of this downward spiral. I could be wrong.

In an earlier thread i put foward that if he can't box until his sentence ends ,( which is what has happened). That this could push Nicky back into his old ways.
I can't see the point of punishing someone twice. If he was a bricklayer he would be allowed to resume his normal job if he was out on parole, why not a boxer.
I'm not saying Nicky is the greatest guy in the world , but he should be allowed to follow his career

I feel the same way, in these cases boxing is the only thing holding their lives together, what on earth is booth going to do for a living if he can't box, how is he going to find any purpose to his life.topper123 wrote:In an earlier thread i put foward that if he can't box until his sentence ends ,( which is what has happened). I don't know what the rules are within the BBBofC, but it seems counterproductive to have the man roaming the streets with no possibility of pursuing his only career, or worse now, locked up again.

I still think that a person would have a case against the BBBoC if they took it to court, jamesmcdonnell wrote:I feel the same way, in these cases boxing is the only thing holding their lives together, what on earth is booth going to do for a living if he can't box, how is he going to find any purpose to his life.topper123 wrote:In an earlier thread i put foward that if he can't box until his sentence ends ,( which is what has happened). I agree totally, a lot of people here seem to be slagging Cooke off but the guy obviously has some issues to have started taking drugs in the first place and addiction is an illness! its not just decision people make on a whim to start taking drugs and become addicted, there are usually a lot of factors behind it. It seems stupid not to allow Cooke to box till 2006... one of his main hopes of staying on the straight and narrow is to be involved in something which will take his mind off the problems he obviously has.... another case of the heavy hand of blind officaldom ruling the day!.
You mean Booth obviously! ;)silkov wrote:jamesmcdonnell wrote:I feel the same way, in these cases boxing is the only thing holding their lives together, what on earth is booth going to do for a living if he can't box, how is he going to find any purpose to his life.topper123 wrote:In an earlier thread i put foward that if he can't box until his sentence ends ,( which is what has happened). Nicky Cook is a good lad I am sure...
He should be allowed to box again nobody is disputing that. But I dont accept giving anyone slack just because things dont go their way they go off the rails - bollocks to that. All that bullshit in his interview in boxing news about how prison sorted him out and then he's back inside in a few weeks.

I'm not saying Nickys an angel, but at the same time it must have been a terrible blow to him when he found out that he wouldn't be allowed to box again till 2006.... boxers only have finite careers after all and another 15 months out of the ring is a long time.... what is the point of letting him out of prison on parole if he isn't going to be allowed to try and rebuild his chosen career for another 1 year plus?..... how is he supposed to make a living?.... in such circumstances its not surprising that he's perhaps succumbed to temptation as his road to any reachable redemption and success has been cut off to him!...007 wrote:He should be allowed to box again nobody is disputing that. I'm not going to contribute to the thread because I don't know the facts and I don't know the lad. However, I do object to this being over critical of the BBBoC in this delicate situation. Saying it is his only career is not exactly true - there are thousands of job vacancy's going (for people with or without job qualification). I know alot of companies or whatever will discard Booth based on his criminal record (although, I'm sure he will find some work), but then why should the BBBoC differ? There is enough criminals and bad eggs in this game as it currently stands.
Alot of people who supported Booth when he was in action will be more than happy to help him out in terms of work. I think regular work mix with a different gang of people (i.e., a building site) would be good therapy for him.

Booth would be wise to change environment. Unfortunately it appears he doesn't contain the certain streak of character people in his type of environment need to escape from it. To make something of his life he'd need to move away from the friends and streets he's familiar with into something completely new, completely different. A posh, or upper-middle class, area where he could redefine himself. But he won't. Like so many, he has grown up and become interwoven in the corrosive, rotting society around him. It would not be surprising to read reports of his death within the next 10 years.
Yes, thats why I don't think he should be even contemplating boxing untill he makes these radical changes. I don't think moving to a middle class area is possible (finances, if he needs to steal, he needs money). However, a new life with new friends is required (thats why I say building site as an example).Manos de Oro wrote:Booth would be wise to change environment.
