WBO lightweight champion Diego “Chico’’ Corrales will take on two-time WBC champion Jose Luis Castillo in a world title unification bout on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Saturday, March 5, 2005, at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
The highly anticipated Battle For Supremacy at 135 pounds on SHOWTIME will be co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and Top Rank, Inc., in association with Banner Promotions.
A site and co-featured bout will be announced in the near future.
How refreshing it is to see in this era of padded records and homebody fighters with paper titles that all the best Lightweight fighters are intent on a little mini tournament to decide who is the best at the weight division. Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales are set to meet on March 5th...Corrales has won one and lost one against Joel Casamayor (a third match is surely in the pipeline) and also beaten Acelino Freitas who fought Casamayor (albeit at a lower weight class). Castillo beat Casamayor and Lazcano and now he and Corrales will collide...it all makes you glad to be a Boxing fan doesn't it
I am warming towards Castillo for this one, his KO ratio is superb and he clearly has the power to hurt Corrales who can be vulnerable, on the flip side does Corrales hurt him back? Castillo is a very solid and physically strong fighter.
I'm looking forward to this one alot, I like Castillo in this one - I think whilst Corrales can hurt anyone, he might struggle to hit the iron willed Castillo.
Also, I think Castillo has underated power and might hurt Corrales.
He is so strong at the weight and the way he beat Casamayor he is looking a very hard person to back against. Also not sure Corrales has the discipline to keep the boxing up for 12 rounds and will ultimately fall short.
These are great matchup's too, Corrales has gone in with Casamayor twice, followed it up with Freitas and now straight into a unification match. Incredible, none of these 'marking time' fights.
Just goes to show when you've got a good promoter....
