Re: Bold Mike McTigue
Because he was a pretty terrible fighter with a pretty terrible record. The no decision era was only thing that kept him boxing for so long. If you go back and read the accounts of his fights he simply ran, held, and avoided action for most of the fights trying simply to hear the final bell. He was only marginally better than Al McCoy and at least McCoy won his title legitimately. I have the rare, complete version of Siki-McTigue and you would have to be generous to give McTigue 5 rounds of the 20. He fought like a cowardly joke and then refused to defend his title against anyone worthy until Berlenbach. He lost every fight against any name opponent he had between winning the title and losing it. His fight against Stribling was one of the biggest cons in the history of the sport (right up there with Wilson-Downey 1) where McTigue and his manager did everything they could to ensure that they would keep the title and still lost. His fight with Flowers was considered a horrible decision. I could go on and on but McTigue was a terrible fighter who had some nice connections that helped to extend his career and make it look a lot glossier than it was. I cant stand the guy. He is a prime example of the cheese champ era where mediocre fighters got ahold of a title one way or another and then hid behind the ND laws to extend their reign which would have surely ended the first time they faced a top opponent.
