Re: Looking for jnr welter, welter or even jnr middle
Mahmudov beat Billy Dib in the Amateur Worlds in 2003.

The bloke Asiku is fighting looks rather tasty. Better than the usual IBO opponent.
Number 4 Super bantamweight in Mexico! He should be able to fight.

yeah i think it's a great fight. It will tell us where Asiku's really at.
Re: Looking for jnr welter, welter or even jnr middle
Mahmudov fought amateur style for three rounds until his corner worked out he could not understand their instructions. Vic Darchinian was called up from ringside to translate into Russian that as a pro he gets points for punching to the body. This served him well. Several body punches and some right hooks later and Singmanasak was out on his feet with 28 seconds of the fourth to go, a good start to the professional career of a man with over 300 amateur fights.
Re: Looking for jnr welter, welter or even jnr middle
Yeah, he can't speak a word of english so it can be hard communicating with him. He speaks a little Turkish so Fidel can get some things through to him. It was interesting the day we did a VO2max test on him, trying to tell him he just wasn't allowed to stop running when he felt like he was going to drop :)
Re: Looking for jnr welter, welter or even jnr middle
He looks impressive,
Don't know whether they should be comparing him to Kostya though. Similar Amature experience but So did Solopov and look were it got him in the Pro game. Kostya had the one thing you can't teach, One punch power in both hands.
He will be a good fighter if managed right, With Linc in his corner i think he will go places.

Re: Looking for jnr welter, welter or even jnr middle
I am not comparing him to anybody. He seems to be a good fighter inn his own right.
The 'no English' bit always reminds me of Kostya Tszyu misunderstanding Johnnie Lewis's instruction to 'go out and win the first round' and splattering Darrell Hiles in 70 seconds. Poor Darrell probably still does not know what hit him.

Re: Looking for jnr welter, welter or even jnr middle
I know it's not often talked of in boxing, but i really like his technique in a punch, it's very different from most and it seems like when he lands it stings for a lot longer than most other fighters. You could see the thai fighter (who wasn't your usual import fighting way out of his division) almost conceded after 3 or 4 punches, he was actually terrified, a look that i haven't seen in too many fighters whilst in the square ring.
Needs to keep his hands up as he can be hit, but there's defiantly something there, it seems that he might need a couple of pro fights to shake of the nasty habits that only an amateur career can give you.
One to watch out for, but on the PR side of things, if he's to become a household sporting figure in Australia, maybe a couple of English lessons couldn't hurt.
