Haye's punching technique is shoddy

Post by Autobarn »

So says Doug Fischer in his mailbag at ringtv.com
Here’s the deal: Haye is aptly nicknamed because he lobs quick haymakers without setting them up with a jab. He rarely makes use of lateral movement and he keeps his hands down. Now, add his questionable chin and stamina to the fact that he’s got shoddy technique and a porous defense.

That doesn’t look like a guy who’s gonna topple the giant. To be honest, I’m not so sure Haye’s a puncher at heavyweight. He dropped Monte Barrett four times and the shot vet got up after each knockdown. This is a guy who got blasted out in two rounds by Cliff Couser. I think Barrett would have got up from even the final knockdown if the ref had allowed it.

Another thing I noticed about Haye was that many of his cruiserweight knockdowns and knockouts were produced by looping right hands to the back of the his opponents' heads. He got away with that mess in England, but now he’s fighting in Germany against a guy whose head is too high up for him to reach around.
maybe he is right, but i get the impression that american writers aren't so keen on the british heavyweights. fischer was the one guy ringside who scored lewis-holyfield 2 for holyfield, i believe. is this more about yanks being reactionary toward british heavyweights? US media seemed flattered that hatton wanted to "crack america" and that calzaghe wanted to cash out "over there." but when there's a heavyweight with some confidence, some arrogance, there does seem to be some resistance.

i know haye is no joe louis, but he's no "jeremy williams with a british accent" either (also courtesy of dougie). i mean what has jeremy williams ever won, if we are being brutally honest?

fornicate him, he's talking out his arse.

Haye's combos have evolved beyond the basics.

Fools like Fischer simply don't know their job.

Haye was average at best against Barrett.
Every fighter has on off night now and then and his timing was off that night. He didn't catch Barrett with one full blooded shot. Every knockdown came from a clipping shot.

I think inactivity showed against Barret but it could be worse here as he has been out for the 12 months since that fight.

Haye is heavy handed - no doubt about it.

But it is hard to say how heavy handed that trnasfers to heavyweight type power.

The writer of the article above is saying nothing I dont know already.

Haye is flawed - has obvious weaknessnes - but we already know that.

He is a exciting fighter.

No 12 rounds here.

He is either knocking this guy out or getting knocked out - its the David Haye way.

I don't share his opinion of Haye, but Fischer's not a bad boxing journo, although he's an absolutely terrible commentator.

It just sounds to me as though he simply doesn't like him, as demonstrated by Max's near vacant coverage of him in the past.

If Haye does do a number on the russian I'm fully expecting the slant to be on Valuev's decline as opposed to Haye's achievment.

Jeremy Williams was a very good fighter at one time!

I remember when Williams was a streaking unbeaten propect under the tutelage of Kevin Rooney. They were very excited about him on the American East Coast and comparisons, unsurprisingly, were made with a young Tyson.

His chin would prove to be his undoing but, as you say, at one time he was a good fighter who people were predicting big things for.

Used to enjoy Fischer's mail bag at maxboxing and he really knows the LA fight scene but I havent read much of his work since he moved over to The Ring.

Whatever his pedigree, I dont agree with his assessment of Haye: you dont win world silver medals as an am without boxing ability.

C'mon the Hayemaker - let the bombs go tonight! :box: :TU:

dougie is a good writer. he's one of the main ppl in bringing coverage of boxing to internet. however i disagree with him on haye, pretty strongly. bit harsh, he is. won't be won over by haye unless he KOs valuev and the klitschko bros, he basically said.

i just think yanks don't want brits holding any portion of the biggest prize.

I agree with him his technique is a bit wild and not very sharp, Wlad for instance is a better technical sharper puncher

Yeah, if only Haye turned over that clubbing left hand on Valuev in the last round then we may have to take it all back. Joking aside I think we shouldn't be looking at heavyweights for pure technique and finesse in the sport.

the irony is, fischer used to bang on about chris arreola's correct, fine technical skills. ooh, the irony. look where haye is now, 2 weight champ. and look where arreola is - suspended for crying and swearing after vitali beatdown, despite his stunning vow to get in shape for future fights.

The truth is that if Haye trained out of the Wild Card, or some other hallowed West Coast gym, Fischer would have been going on for years about what an explosive and well kept secret David Haye is.

Dougie is caught up in his own world it seems to me - Haye just doesn't fit into his world of west coast boxers.

It will be interesting to see how he comments on the Haye win - despite the somewhat negative boxing, Haye demonstrated elusiveness and good boxing acumen to negate the big man's attacks; will these aspects of the performance get a mention?

hope so. haye's rep as puncher, his mouth, will probably have ppl overlooking these aspects which helped negate the giant! i think ppl don't want to see big men being defensive. but when the opponent is so much bigger, and when you get the nod in germany, i have no problem with this.

i agree, dougie is good at writing about west coast boxing, so he doesn't write too much of interest for the UK fans. i guess we all have our little worlds.

Shoddy with the right hand - no doubt.

Because he damaged it on Valuev's big head. :)

No he's not, In fact Vlad pushes his punches whereas Haye's are far more natual & fluid.

Have you seen Valds uppercut?

Thought not, Vlad hasnt either.

I can't believe that in this day and age, it is seen as acceptable to use a homosexual label as a pejorative. That racist arsehole troll rightly had his posts deleted and the same should happen here.

Haye wings his shots plain and simple, he is a good athlete so gets away with it but his technique is nothing to write home about, he cant throw a short sharp left hook to save his life, and if he could he'd of had a much easier night because Valuev is a sucker for that shot. BTW Wlad has 1 of the best short sharp left hooks in HW history, and Im not a Wlad fan but facts are facts. Wlad doesnt have an uppercut no and its a weakness, cant remember Haye ever throwing an uppercut either though.

Dougie is right.

Haye's technique isn't the best...but his athleticism means he gets away with it. Similar to RJJ (who Haye essentially copies in every way) but even then not as good.

yeah you often get the dynamic speed/power fighters throwing slightly off kilter, wonky, not straight/short enough punches.

obviously, for a great correct left hook, you had holyfield. joe louis is my fave heavyweight ever for punch delivery. short and sharp. very correct.

from the mailbag of dougie!, who scored it 115-113 haye.
...I’ve got to give Haye a little bit of props. I didn’t think he could box a disciplined stick-and-move fight, and he did. I didn’t think he had the stamina to avoid Valuev’s pressure for 12 rounds. I was wrong. He out-pointed (narrowly in my opinion) a fighter I thought would gradually grind him down to a late stoppage.

So while I was under-whelmed by his overall performance, I was impressed with his ability. He’s got a cooler head under fire than I though he did.

Well done, Mr. Haye, maybe you’re not Jeremy Williams with a British accent.

'Gay' is commonly tossed about in these parts. We mostly use 'queer' when referring to our resident poop stabbers.
Congratulations on the extensive range of your capabilities in bigotry.

I'm sure you'd get on well with Nick Griffin and other facists.

Now now. Terry's definitely not a fascist, just an arsehole (love you Terry!) who believes that words carry no freight or heft, so you can basically call anyone what you like.

As you may have gathered, I don't agree with him on this, but I'll defend to the death his right to say it.

Kind of. Anyway, TerryD=Not a Nazi.
