Boxing News .No Ratings ?

Post by contender »

Got Boxing News this Morning and like last year assumed the new ratings would be in the Xmas special .a bit dissapointed. Last ones they did were in July so we should be due them.
Intresting article with allegedly in it.

is it just me or does every christmas edition of Boxing News always have an article about muhammad ali in it?

Maybe its just the 'great escape' syndrome. where everyone seems to think its on TV every xmas but it isnt!

Funny to read the `under-rated top 15.
Only a British paper could put Bruno in there and try to convince us otherwise, also when they wrote `only the very, very best would have beaten him` about Hamed isn’t that stating the obvious, only the very, very best get to be legitimate champions after all.

Nice little piece on Ezzard Charles, obviously they recycle more about Ali, and yes there always seems to be a bigger piece on Ali in every boxing special.

And nice to see they still pad out the Christmas issue with amateur news, 11pages.
I am not interested in the amateur pages, to me the articles are unorganised and so easy to flick passed.
Perhaps if they organised them into categories, England page, Scottish page, Welsh and Irish page….then again that wouldn’t be worth it would it because they never seem to cover any amateur news outside of England.

Not worth the double price tag if you ask me, I only bought it as I was going to be holed up with the in-laws for 48 hours and needed some respite!!

What's the difference between In-Laws and Outlaws?

Outlaws are wanted.

I agree.
I think the xmas edition which is almost always a double should have less padding and more articles on past and present boxers that rarely get a mention, one page on Ezzard when alot more could have been written, and maybe a little info on the other forgotten and avoided boxers of that time. Instead of what everybody has read a million times about Ali.

I`m sure almost all their readers would enjoy reading about this than 11pages of amateur, there has been much written about too much amateur in the paper, and look what we get at xmas when we are all looking for something to read..a double helping of amateur.

BN is still the best boxing paper, then again it is the only boxing paper.
The monthly boxing magazines are I would guess only appealing to the occasional boxing fan, you know the people who still `fink Hamed is da best`and think Bruno is still champ..anyway hangover is clearing off to top up.

I agree, I actually wrote to Boxing News about this very subject about 5 years ago. I also seem to recall a thread Bennie started about what we would like to see more of in BN. Both times I mentioned doing articles/interviews on the slightly lesser known Boxers such as Ron Lyle, Bennie Briscoe, Kevin Finnigan etc etc.

To be fair to BN Tris Dixon has done some fantastic interviews for BN with fighters over the last 18 months which are always very enjoyable. Such as the one he did with George Chuvola in this week edition, although it was a bit short.

BN still rocks though. :TU:

Real tragic article on Chuvalo, it could have been more though, seemed to only tell of his tragedies in his later life.
Brave man though.
He mentioned about Floyd Patterson `s health, what did he mean by that? I have not heard anything about him suffering pugilistic dementia if this is what Chuvalo was getting at.

Yes, sadly Pattersons memory is going a few years ago Patterson was in court as some sort of witness. He could not recall his PA's name. I seem to recall he struggled to recall names of his family members as well.

Very sad, I have read a few articles saying that Floyd is loosing his memory over the last few years. Tragic news for such a fine fighter and by all accounts a nice guy.

In the interviews I`ve seen with Floyd he comes across as a great guy, real shame.

Think that was a waste of money then what is going to be in the next issue??

I could not believe they thought by putting much bigger and more photo’s in the xmas edition along with more adverts and amateur pages they could fool us into believing it really was a double issue.

As said it really is the only boxing paper because it’s a weekly and not a monthly where the news is old news by the time it’s in the shops.
But how much will their subscribers tolerate before they decide to just log on to get the latest news off the web.

There are some fantastic free sites out there to get the latest on the boxing scene…BN beware.

I`ll start a thread on improvements there should and could be made to BN, lets see what gets mentioned and if BN listens..

Well I suppose we can loo forward to the next part about 'Clays' first few opponents. Make a wee change there. an article about him. The articel on Chuvalo only touched the surface of what seemd like a fantastic opportunity to tell a genuinelly interesting and possibly inspiring tale, but the chance was missed in favour of 11 amatuer pages, more adverts and yet another Ali tale.

I too thought that paying the thick end of a fiver for this was nothing short of a rip off. As for how subscribers will react? Well I subscribed for years but refused to renew my subscription when it ran out in November. this was due mainly to their piss poor delivery service, their refusal to take any responsibility for it and their inaction over the emails and telephone calls i made. They blamed the ost office for not delivering on time (if at all) when all the time its them who employ the service of the post office.

Thought it was interesting to see the wee box on the seconds out page asking about problems we may be having with subscriptions. if they paid any attention to what we had been writing on this board they would have seen there were problems months ago. after all there were various threads about it. Still its good to see that this is them addressing it now...

I also find that the cover price of 2.25 a bit hefty when you consider what the actual content is especially compared to the covereage you can get online now. Im seriously thinking about stopping buying Boxing News altogether. Never thought Id ever find myself saying that. Shame too.

Although i was disapointed with no ratings in and they are going in on the 7th of jan .
You still cant knock the coverage of ringside reports from this country from big shows to small hall. Although you can get results else where you will not get fight reports of small shows and this is were boxing news excels at as well as giving Amateurs coverage.
