Quiz: Top Athletes Who Grabbed the Headlines Early 1900s?

Post by Ric »

During my newspaper research the other day, I came across a February 6, 1943 Tacoma News Tribune article by Dillon Graham--the Associated Press's Sports Editor. He wrote that he had gone thru the AP's index card records--which indicate the athletes who had "grabbed" the newspaper headlines for the previous 30 years. Graham came up with a list of about the top 20 or so. Two of them were boxers.
So, my trivia quiz is: Can you name those that Graham listed in the Top Seven? Bonus points for anyone who can name the Top Three--in order. I'll assist as we go on. :TU:

Yes, Joshua, Jack Dempsey was among those Graham listed! . :TU: But where in his list? (None of the others you mentioned were in Graham's list.) And, of course, Rickard was not an athlete.
From here on, please, one guess per customer, per post, after someone else guesses. :)

Ruth is #3. That's the only correct element of your guess, TC. :)
