Quiz: Top Athletes Who Grabbed the Headlines Early 1900s?

During my newspaper research the other day, I came across a February 6, 1943 <i>Tacoma News Tribune</i> article by Dillon Graham--the Associated Press's Sports Editor. He wrote that he had gone thru the AP's index card records--which indicate the athletes who had "grabbed" the newspaper headlines for the previous 30 years. Graham came up with a list of about the top 20 or so. Two of them were boxers.
So, my trivia quiz is: Can you name those that Graham listed in the Top Seven? Bonus points for anyone who can name the Top Three--in order. I'll assist as we go on.

Yes, Joshua, Jack Dempsey was among those Graham listed! .

But where in his list? (None of the others you mentioned were in Graham's list.) And, of course, Rickard was not an athlete.
