Evander Holyfield

Now he has been banned from fighting in the States, would anybody pay to watch him fight in the UK?

I ask because most people agree he should give up boxing, but hand on heart if he came over here to fight a credible British heavyweight, would people actually pay to see him?

Very good question "I Like Beer". Tough one to call, I suppose if it was a good fight for him (a guranteed win) and on the undercard of a good bill I would watch him live. However, if he was headlining then it would probably be against a Danny Williams / Audley Harrison / Matt Skelton type of opponent, and I don't think I would want to watch him get beaten up (which he would do).

If it handled like Thomas Hearns' debut in the UK then yes, if it was fight he was likely to get humiliated then probably not - although I would probably tune into the box. I just wouldn't want to see a legend beaten up.

Even Thomas Hearns appeareance here was very sad... though he won the fight the bout was very much a non-event and it was obvious that Hearns was shot... saddest of all was that people were walking out on the fight!... the only good thing about it was that Hearns hardly got hit as his opponent seemed reluctant to do anything... the few punches Hearns did take seemed to wobble him..... so all in all I wouldn't want to see Holifield in the ring in the UK... mainly because it wouldn't be Evander in there, not Evander the fighter.... it would just be a sad dissapointment... memories are better.

Good call. As much as I understand the 'he's a legend I wanna see him fight' line of thought its that sort of view that is keeping the man fighting.

Lets be honest.
If you were to meet Evander at some event would you shake his hand and ask for an autograph and agree with him when he tells you he’s gonna re-win the title or would you tell him to retire and he’s well past it?

I would honestly tell him to his face that he should retire and that I don't want to see him in the same position as Ali in 10 years time!...... I'm sure there are still plenty of yes men telling Evander he can be champ again... the same thing happened with Ali and look where it took him!... you wouldn't be doing Evander any favours by telling him he is still the best!...

I fear fpr Holyfields health in 10/15 years time I really do. If he fought in the UK I would try my best not to be tempted to go and watch him live. As others have already said his opponent would dictate to a large degree my decision.

If it looked a tough fight for Commander Evander I would be much less likely to go.

Its amazing that Evander managed to comeback from his losses to Moorer and the 3rd Bout with Bowe when he really seemed totally shot... I'm sure a lot of it was mind over matter... Evander was definately at his peak in the late 80s and early 90s... he's really been running on just heart alone since about 98/99.....

I have just finished reading the outstanding McIlvanny On Boxing by Hugh McIlvanney. Even back in 1996 Hugh was refering to Holyfield as a jaded veteran.

It's a scattering of his articles from the mid 60's to late 1990's covering the usual big fighters in the UK and abroad. Ali, Foreman, Tyson, Benn, Owen, Lewis, Holyfield, Curry etc.

A lot of the stories I am sure you will know already mate, but the way Hugh McIlvanney writes about Boxing, TRUST ME, it's worth reading about these fights and fighters again.

A Boxing writer of the highest order IMO.

The telling of the story is always very important.
Reading `John the great by Donald Barr Chidsey` and got to say a very, very good read, his style is just fantastic.
I will send for this title.
