Olympic featherweight quarterfinalist; Montreal, Canada. Armstrong “lost by the narrowest of margins against Herrera and the U. S. camp howled in protest. ‘Armstrong had the bout stolen from him, pure and simple,’ said Rollie Schwartz, the U. S. team manager. ‘Ninety per cent of the blows Herrera threw were illegal with the gloves open. He should have been warned the required number of times and then disqualified.’ Two officials rules for Armstrong 59-58. Two ruled for Herrera 59-58. The fifth scored it 59-59, but gave the fight to Herrera, apparently on aggressiveness” (Oakland [California] Tribune 7-28-76:39).

July 28 - Armstrong was so disillusioned by his controversial defeat at the hands of Herrera that he retired from amateur boxing. His record at this point was 150-19.
