In praise of Miguel Cotto

Post by Matt W »

Cotto is a class act. I'm a fan of both him and Pacquiao, but was sorry to see him so comprehensively beaten last night. What really gets me is the fact that this courageous, decent man was pretty much all but ruined as an elite fighter by an Antonio Margarito who, it would seem, cheated in the most despicable manner. At only 29 he should have had a few more years at the very top and it's hard to see what is next for him. He can no doubt beat second-tier fighters convincingly but in tough fights I would worry for his future well-being.

Margarito has disgraced the sport and it will be a gross injustice if he goes on to have any further success.

Class post indeed, mate, very nice touch! Be honest guys, when Cotto was knocked down in the 2nd, if someone had said he would have had some success after that & the fight would go to the last round, there can't have been amny who would have believed that?

Cotto showed to a certain extent. he could box on the back foot even thoug he was under pressure while doing so. No disrespect, but i think Cotto showed the gap in class between himself & soemone like Hatton. People say Cotto was destroyed, but if that's the case, what the hell happened to Hatton? Cotto can still come back after a good rest. I worry more about the mental aspect of suffering such a loss after putting everything into his preparation.

Yeah but he can look at both Hatton and De La Hoya and seeing the way they were obliterated, he can take heart in the fact he lasted 11 and a bit rounds with Pacquiao. He can come back and a fight with the loser of Berto/Mosley would be a good start.

I do worry that Cotto's punch resistance is on the wane. Considering that Oscar was never even off his feet, I think Cotto has probably never really recovered from that pounding by Margarito.

Cotto isn't shot, but he is vulnerable now.

Its a real shame that cheating frigger Margarito seems to have left a permanent mark on Cotto.

I don't think Cotto has a lot left to give to be honest. Perhaps he can get by Mosley one more time, but Shane will probably try and take him out having seen that result.

Cotto showed true heart in there tonight to redeem himself (although he didn't need to!) for quitting against Margarito.

I just felt the weight and previous wars may have taken its toll on him. He seems drained at welter but too small for light middle.

A true warrior who tried his best last night but lost to a phenomenon.

regardless of cotto's wane,it's still a remarkable achievment for a guy who was boxing at 9-4 18 months ago!!

arum knew cotto was finished, they secured victory by dragging him down another 2lbs!! to defend his title!!manny aint a welter so catchweight makes it fair but no way will pretty boy give him any such benefits!!

i found it really sad to see cotto struggle & look so weak while getting batterd for 12 rds

Cotto is one of my favourite boxers, he gives it his all evry time.

There is no denying though thatr he took an uglyu beating from Pacman. He was getting beat up in there, his face was testament to that.

Cotto has beaten some top guys, so it just shows how well Pacman actually did in this fight, to dominate Cotto like that.

Cotto showed some heart and if I have one criticism of Pacman, it is that he should have really finished Cotto before the ref stopped it in the 12th. He was so comprehensively on top, he could and perhaps should have ended it earlier.

I still fancy Mayweather to beat him at welterweight, anyone else and I would take Manny.

Amen.
And well done, good to see Cotto getting recognition for a really gutsy performance.
Hard to watch any fighter that you admire getting a beating like that.

On a sidenote, ref was spot on, gave Cotto the chance to finish the fight, but he was in tune with what was going on - he knew the split second that Paquiao was going to go for the KO and acted swiftly (without the customary posing for the tv camera's with arms waving wildly).

And Paquiao didn't have a bad night either.

Both Cotto and Pacman, have both been my favourite fighters of the past few years, and it was horrible to see Cotto take a beating like that, but I don't think it would have been the same had this been before Cotto fought Margarito.

And Pacman is just so relentless, I fought before Pacman came out for the 12th he might just take it easy and let cotto see the end, but he had no intention of doing that at all, he was still throwing brutal shots and looking for the KO right up untill it was stopped.

What a fight though! :box:

Cotto is a tough guy and he showed what a class act he was last night. the guy was absolutley battered and knew he had been beaten up in a fight seen by a worldwide audience, but he took the loss well and i just hope he carries on because he's still capable of getting some big fights, especially with his huge Puerto Rican following.

No, he didn't. He was getting beaten to a pulp and simply didn't have anything left in the tank. The fight was beaten out of him that night by a cheat.

Here's all you need to know: He gave one of the greatest fifteen boxers in the history of the sport a tough argument for six rounds.

Cotto is a class, class act and one of the finest boxers today.

You would have to say Mosleys chances are improved, but I am not sure we realise how hard Pacman hits. I would go so far to say that he is the hardest hitter in Boxing P4P, and the speed of his left cross lead is just mindblowing. I dont see Mosley or anyone below 154 hitting as hard as Pacman.

DLH wasn't really caught quite as clean, and has a solid, solid chin (something about Oscar that's often forgotten). He was hurt to the belly at least once, though, and buzzed a couple of times.

Meantime, I think Pacquaio is considerably stronger now.

Remember, that was only his second fight above 130.

A class act is Miguel Cotto. It realy pissed me off to hear Matthew Hall label him a quitter, after the Marg fight, saying he'd thrown out all his Cotto DVD's as a result.
What a dick, if he had a fraction of the heart Cotto has, he might actually do something....so it was good to see him get a predictable beating against Anthony Small.

Cotto is too brave for his own good, and his useless corner is even braver. They should have shown a bit of compassion and pulled him out after the 9th round. He was a beaten man, had no chance, and they sent him back out for more. The kind of corner that can get a man killed.
It was painful to watch in the end, and the ref messed up his chance to do the right thing and stop the fight in the 9th, as Cotto was shipping some real damage. Instead someone, the doctor hopefully, had put a rocket up him after the 11th, so he dived in at the first opportunity. The timing was off, but it was the right thing to do. Manny seemed to be looking at the ref to stop if for around 3 rounds I thought.

I too was going to say that Cotto is too brave for his own good - he doesn't know when to quit which isn't always a good thing.

Miguel is a class act and a good, tough fighter who still has a future in the game...

He and his corner though have to know when to say 'enough' if they want some more mileage and money.
