He was a Light-heavy actually!...
8)
...very good fighter who could box a bit too... I have his fights vs Lopez and Braxton... think he is still in prison... shame really, I was reading about him recently in a 70s mag and the amount which he was jailed for robbing was about 280 dollars!...... he wasn't found on the scene but his car was spotted in the vacinity and he already had a long prison record.

Monroe was a top ten fighter for what seemed like a decade. I saw him fight live here in Seattle on the Randolph-Cardona card. He was a bit passed his prime by then but still had enough left to get the victory.THINKINGMAN wrote:DOES ANYONE REMEMBER A GREAT LITTLE J/WELTER MONROE BROOKS

I'm pretty sure James Scott is still behind bars. He may have been transferred out of Rahway to another NJ guest house. It was Jerry Martin who beat Scott in Rahway and ended the speculation about whether a champion would have to defend against Scott in the prison. I don't think he fought again after that loss and we really haven't heard a word out of him since. He wasn't like Rubin Carter. There was no doubt or controversy about Scott's incarceration. He was a serious badass who was convicted of some scary acts.
Actually Scott won a fight after the lost to Martin and was still in the mix. It was his only loss.
But Qawi, himself a fellon who learned to box while in jail, came home for a bout with Scott.
We all know how tough Qawi was. Qawi gave Scott his last loss, and put an end to the bizzare story of the contender rising threw the ranks of the pro light heavyweight scene while in jail.
It is kind of ironic Qawi is the man who did it. Of course the only man who was going to better Qawi was Spinks (Qawi had lost before Spinks once, but he avenged it).
Qawi actually had NO amateur fights. Only sparring in prison. He got out and turned pro at 25! He became a two division champ too! ANd he was only 5'6" fighting light heavyweights and cruisers weights! TOugh, tough guy that Qawi.
Loved to watch him fight.

That Qawi was a bad mother. Rough, tough and durable. But I think that Mattew Saad Muhammad lost to him when he was past his prime and also Muhammad by that time already received a lot of blows from the likes of Yaqui Lopez, Marvin Johnson, Murray Sutherland, and others. But still, Qawi was a great fighter without a doubt. Do yiu guys remember the war he had with Evander Holyfield???6 Pack wrote:Actually Scott won a fight after the lost to Martin and was still in the mix. It was his only loss.

Yes I do, that was a real war to. Holyfield was taken to hospital after that fight suffering from dehydration. At one point the doctors thought The Real Deal had damaged his kidneys.elmersalsa wrote:Do yiu guys remember the war he had with Evander Holyfield???[/size]
Qawi was past his best by that point but was still a fearsome fighter, but that fight pretty much finished him at the highest level.
I've heard and read that before his fight with Qawi, Michael Spinks was terrified if him. But he managed to control and channel that emotion in a positive way to beat Qawi.lumpymo wrote:Monroe Brooks and Duran fought at 140lbs, Dwight Braxton was 5'7" I believe not 5'6" and the meanest, toughest looking guy you ever saw at 175lbs
cheers M.O.
Of course the opposite happened to Spinks when he fought Tyson, that time the fear got the better of him.
