I remember this fight like it was yesterday. Check out the opening round. Haye caught Thompson with some wicked shots, but even when Thompson was momentarily all over the shop, notice how bloody quickly he manages to recoup and recover! Must've been a weird night for Haye, but no doubt has helped him become the fighter he is today.

i think a few refs would have stopped it for Haye apart from the fact it was Carl Thompson and the reputation he had.

Which brings the point should a referee let someone take punishment due to there reputation of comebacks and being able to take punishment or should a ref stop a fight when a fighter is taking alot of punishment.

Sometimes refs jump in far too early these days.

remember we had to wait until the saturday to see it.

was a bit surprised when i heard the result on the friday night.

didn't think it would be a cakewalk but i did think haye would have a bit too much for the old warhorse.

in retrospect the corner did throw the towel in a bit quick.

haye wasn't a complete goner and maybe could have fought his way back.

but i think booth looked at the big picture and knew he'd have many more nights to prove himself.

Refs as a whole do normally stop fights in strange places, 2 that I've seen just this weekend, with the Cotto stoppage and the Renda fight, if Renda was a Olympian Samuels would of been stopped earlier, just look at when Samuels lost to Groves????

Great fight though and the first career defining fight for Haye.

I've noticed that too- with prospects and Olympians, the ref is very very quick to jump in and stop the fight.

Ha ha, yeah that was funny! But, to be fair, at that stage I guess it could have been. So much pressure is heaped on about this 'unbeaten' tag in boxing that it can really harm a fledgling career if a loss occurs. Ultimately, Mr Haye has done alright for himself, so no harm done really.

Back to the fight though. He just ran out of gas. Went for the early knockout and it just didn't happen. I know he had a rep for being a bit of a playboy, but does anyone recall if he was actually a bit slack in his general training at that stage? He'd knocked out everyone that had been put in front of him up until that point - was he overly arrogant? I don't really recall, to be honest. A lot of the Thompson related criticism is all done in retrospect now, but I just wondered if anyone had an accurate insight into the David Haye of pre-Thompson times?

I remember this fight aswell, in fact one of my mates went to it and had a spare ticket. Unfortunately the current Mrs RA2006 parents were visiting London that night and were staying with us, and faced with removal of my manhood if I went, I elected to stay at home!!!



Anyhow, I remember Haye said in a interview (to the build up to the Enzo fight i think) that he came into the Thompson fight underprepared as he was 'lazy in training'. It was this fight which changed his attitude to preparation and ensuring highest standards of training and conditioning are met before each fight.

Still the only Haye fight I have been to thanks to the Gelsenkirchen farce. I remember thinking it could have easily have been stopped from where I was sitting and quite a few fans around me were calling for it - even knowing Thompson's rep he was still very old and expected to get blown away by many.
Haye loaded up way too much and I think it actually affected his power. Best thing that could have happened to him, perfect timing to stop it from Booth. Haye was only going to take further punishment, he had nothing left in his shots.

I think the main criticism leveled at Haye's training at the time was that he did very little roadwork and a bit too keen on lifting weights

I think that was the other way around. Thompson was definitely offered a rematch on at least three different occasions and turned them all down. It was all to do with money. I'm sure both men wanted to do it again.

i'm sure i saw this on youtube a bit back but maybe not as I don't remember it being so spectacular. Huge punishment by Haye early on. Thompson is some fighter.

The commentator...I don't know his name - works with Woodhall a lot - was doing okay til he started screaming like a hysteric woman. Aside from the fact it's complete sh*te that losing a fight leaves a career "in tatters".

Very, very silly tactic by Haye in trying to bomb out Thompson in a 12 round fight. Bet he doesn't make that mistake again.

He was a playboy fo a lot of his early career but he showed the odd bit of focus - he said he trained like a beast for the Arthur Williams fight - and it showed. Haye was awesome that night, a novice walking through a tough, former world level campaigner. It seemed like he was looking past Thompson before they fought. I was gutted when I checked Teletext the next day and found out he lost.
