Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Counries
who is going to represent the U.S. on this trip?
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Counries
The countries are required to provide a list to Russia by November 20th so hopefully all the countries going and their list of boxers will be available soon thereafter.
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Counries
The boxers for Team USA are going to need to get ready to compete at their home gyms with their personal coaches. They need to be on weight too. There won't be much time to do anything in Russia so they have to be ready before leaving home.
I am going to basically have a training camp at home for my son. He is training hard this week and next week, then our training camp kicks in right after the holiday for the next 2 weeks ending on December 11th. Those last 2 weeks will be like the training camps in Colorado Springs. He will run in the morning, train in the early afternoon and again in the evening. Lots of interval training, speed & agility work, strength training, cardio work, boxing drills and sparring. He will be as ready as he can be.

Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
I believe Ted Palac will be the team manager. I think that is a good choice since Ted has been a successful amateur boxing coach for many years. He is also from Poland and therefore he might be able to understand some Russian (Polish and Russian are both Slavic languages). Even being able to communicate a little bit with the locals can be helpful on these kinds of trips.

Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
I didn't think Russia would have their top guys in with the President's Cup in Baku the week before but it looks like they do. They just recently finished their nationals.Dennis wrote:Source: the Russian Federation website

Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
good luck to our team we will need it. But we have a pretty solid team we should do well
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
where is Warren? Raynell Williams? Michael Hunter? I know guys earned their ways winning the US nationals, but three mentioned opted not to turn "pro" and chase gold in 2012 and somehow haven't fought in any recent dual meets.
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
Mike Hunter is turning pro - his scheduled pro debut card was cancelled; I've also hear Rau'shee is turning pro and haven't heard anything about Raynell in months.
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
Warren - injured his foot and has been out for a month or two b/c of it.NYboxing wrote:where is Warren? Raynell Williams? Michael Hunter? Williams - personal issues got in the way and he wasn't training properly. Not sure if he will return to form or not.
Hunter - He is the #1 SHW in USA. He boxed in World Championships and lost his first bout to the gold medalist Cammarelle. Tough draw! Hunter has been waivering back and forth about staying amateur versus turning pro. We will have to wait and see what he does. My guess is he will turn pro before the Olympics as USA Boxing's financial problems have made it so they won't be able to afford to pay him enough to keep him amateur for 2.5 more years. USA is going to continue to struggle until we can find ways to keep guys amateur long enough. Other countries have their boxers work for the government (local, state, or national) or at least get paid by the government to have sufficient income and time to train and travel for shows/tournaments.
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
thanks for the update Dennis. I saw the campaign on the website, 90-90 days - I could only imagine how close they are going to get.
But back to the subject in hand - good luck USA boxers!!

Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
For this thread it isn't about Hunter as he isn't going to Russia. Javier Torres is the SHW going to Russia. Mel - you probably know Javier as he trains in SoCal. He is a great young man and represents the USA with class. I hope he goes over to Russia and does well. We need to get behind our boxers and support those that choose to stay amateur.
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
Sorry - I was just making a comment about a reference to Hunter in this thread. I'll be more circumspect from now on.For this thread it isn't about Hunter as he isn't going to Russia.
Are you saying this isn't happening? We need to get behind our boxers and support those that choose to stay amateur.
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
Mel - no it isn't happening. Many coaches and boxers only look out for themselves and try to sabotage others. There are lots of people who really don't support our boxing teams. We also need to give our boxers every opportunity to succeed.
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
Well said Dennis. I'm sure you've been through it too. But it is important to support our team as much as possible.
Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
Yes, I try to support Team USA as much as possible. I also try to give constructive criticism to make USA Boxing and our international teams better.
Take a look at the Russian Federation and all the camps and competitions their boxers attend. That is the #1 team in the world and we could learn a lot from them. Hopefully while our team is in Russia they will learn a thing or two. If they bring it back to the U.S. and share it with the rest of us, maybe we can win a few medals in London-2012.

Re: 2009 World Cup of Petroleum Countries
Russia's program is 100% supported by the government. We are the only country in boxing that is NOT supported by the government. Russia's boxers don't have to worry about wages, housing and food when they attend camps and competitions. Our boxers have to worry about taking off time from work, being able to support families, blah, blah. Makes a big difference.Take a look at the Russian Federation and all the camps and competitions their boxers attend. That is the #1 team in the world and we could learn a lot from them
