GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
Good commentator on his day in a love him/hate him kind of way. If I remember he lost his job somewhat controversially, then had a disastrous time trying to make arm-wrestling a popular support fell on hard times but anyone know where he is now?
Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
Gary is living in South London, he is on facebook, spoke to him a few weeks ago, he is doing fine,
Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
Don't tell me, don't tell me... is it Edinburgh?? No? OK, one more try, one more try... Errr... is it, the Costa Del Sol?
Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
I wish he was back on Sky. He spoke his mind and was a funny fella. I'd rather listen to him than be bored witless by Nicky 'Aled Jones' Dad' Piper.

Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
mason was a brilliant commentator, one of my favourites. his only problem was his balls were too big for the suits in control.
Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
My only problem with Mason was that he was beaten on Gamesmaster on that arcade game where you had to punch the pad to destroy the asteroid.
Dominik Diamond was most displeased.

You bastard - that brought back a moment in time - 1991?

Dunno when it was, but it brought back a moment for me, too.Carlos-Wigan wrote:Carbo wrote:My only problem with Mason was that he was beaten on Gamesmaster on that arcade game where you had to punch the pad to destroy the asteroid.

I remember thinking Gary was brilliant at the time (I was only 12) and thought that he would be world champ in no time. So, it came as a bit of a shock to see him beaten on the asteroid game by some schmuk from the local arcade hall.
Meantime, I remembered a games magazine I used to buy, Mean Machines. Man, I used to love that magazine. Anyone else remember it?
Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
Sky will never employ anyone that speaks his mind, don't matter if he is knowlegable, humorous and great to watch, why do you think they employ the likes of Piper

Well said mate and unfortunately so true.Coco wrote:Sky will never employ anyone that speaks his mind, don't matter if he is knowlegable, humorous and great to watch, why do you think they employ the likes of Piper

If I remember the challenge rightly (and I must admit it is only a very vague memory from my childhood) didnt big Gary rely on little more than a jab to try to win the challenge - I certainly dont remember him winding up a haymaker at any point?... Gary used to sweat for fun.Carbo wrote:Dunno when it was, but it brought back a moment for me, too.Carlos-Wigan wrote:Carbo wrote:My only problem with Mason was that he was beaten on Gamesmaster on that arcade game where you had to punch the pad to destroy the asteroid.

Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
I agree. I always liked Mason too. There does seem a distinct lack of charism in the studio with Piper & Nelson (I can't take him serious cos he was such a runner in his day, how can he talk about a fighter not showing heart etc).mrrocco wrote:I agree - Sky are pathetic - they only want yes men. I liked Mason, he spoke what he thought - isn't that the idea of a 'colour' commentator type - rathert than someone towing the political party line.Coco wrote:Sky will never employ anyone that speaks his mind, don't matter if he is knowlegable, humorous and great to watch, why do you think they employ the likes of Piper

Spot on Deserter - Zzap 64 was the mag to have aged 10 or so..Deserter wrote:I do indeed. Along with Zzaaap 64 and C&VG! QualityCarbo wrote: Meantime, I remembered a games magazine I used to buy, Mean Machines. Man, I used to love that magazine. Anyone else remember it?
I seem to remember the reviewers (Jaz, Gaz etc) all had spikey 80s hair cuts?!?
EDIT: Just checked and the mag lives on in some sort of online archive. It looks truly ancient now though!

I thought Mean Machines was better than CVG, but, ultimately, they were both great. I used to get really excited about getting them, for some reason. You can actually find the Mean Machines archive online.
I realise now, however, that Jaz Rignall was a shit writer.
But what a great fcuking job they all had.

Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
I have fond memories of working with Gary when he tried his hand as a boxing promoter in 1997. A great character and a terrific boxer. The tabloids poked fun at him over the size of his belly and his head, but he had surprisingly fast hands and a chin of iron. He gave Lewis hell and was still snarling defiance and landing good punches when the end came due to swollen eyes. I doubt too many share this view but I'm convinced he would have stood firm under Tyson's assaults and forced him to quit.

many moons ago, i used to work as a computer games tester :) i sometimes wonder if i did the right thing by getting out, considering the current situation.
Re: GARY MASON – WHERE IS HE NOW?
Well I worked at Future Publishing and ran Gamesmaster mag for a while, as well as socialising with all the guys from Official Playstation, XBox 360 mag etc, and there's no doubt those jobs have their perks - used to love finishing the day off with a game of Pro Evo on the big screen
I started off on the Vic 20 (but really wished I'd got a Spectrum Lowersmiths
), graduated to the Commodore 64, brief flirtation with the Nintendo (Goldeneye was a classic) bofore getting my PS2 and have been loyal to the Xbox 360 for the last few years. Still love a bit of gaming - currently working my way through Batman Arkham Asylum and looking forward to picking up the latest COD. Who wan'ts to grow up?
