Would a Joe Frazier vsRoy Jones fight be entertaining?

Post by BoxBuzz »

Roy on the night he beat Ruiz vs Joe on the night he beat Ali....

Or is it just my perverse sense of cruelty that would be appeased as I reveled in seeing a good old fashioned Joe Frazier style beating put on Roy?

I think it would be, though fight for either guy, both would be in shape.
I for some reason can not imagine the great Jones beating Frazier.
He would need to move alot, avoid the ropes and pepper away at Joe.
I see it reaching the final bell, but Frazier would get the nod.
Not a bad match up.

I think RJJ would jab and grab alot, tie up in the clinch, and evade
well, but Frazier would reach out wide often with his hook and
land them, Frazier would also keep the pressure up that would see
RJJ slowing down somewhat.

Frazier UD, close but Smoking is on fire.

regardless of what most of you think on these boards, roy jones was a hell of a fighter. at his best, he was the most talented fighter i've seen. if jones is at his absolute best, i think he could pull it off. if he's anything less than his best, no way. frazier would be all over him.

Wouldn't they both be tired from fighting once that night?

I know it's not funny.

Good one! In that case throw Ruiz and Ali on to the undercard.

Roy would make it to the 12th? or the 15th? How? Is he going to borrow James Toney's beard? The kicker for me imagining it going to a decision is that RJJr chin. Just how long can Roy poke and bolt with that furious force of nature in fast pursuit? Yancey has it at 4 rounds, but 12 or 15? Is that possibly in the cards?

I mean he's down at the hands of Tarver and Johnson. Those guys are a couple of cupcakes compared to Joe. And though Johnson might match Joe's speed at times certainly Joe is faster than Antonio. I mean I want to see Frazier divy out the full 15 rounds of beatdown time but how does Roy get there? Does he grab a cab and show the driver a roll of C notes?

60 ft ring? :D

Seriously, this would be a seek and destroy mission deluxe and I just see Joe getting him pretty quick.

60 ft ring? Might get him there!

I'm thinkin' it could be promoted well by Roy if it was the first fight in history to ever be fought out on a full sized football field. He could wear his microphone on him to hear the whistling wind, and they could put the cameras on steel rails along the sidelines in order to reach speeds of up to 60 MPH to be able to keep a close lens on the action.

OK I have to stop, I'm havin' way too big of a laugh with this one. Laughin so hard I got beer up my nose. And that aint right.

How about an option for Fan Man to fly by and give Roy a lift if needed?

RJJ has depths of talent, natural instincts and good reflexes.
I do not see him being stopped. It would not be Frazier=Foster.

I think Frazier wins, but it is not a quick and easy blow out.

No. One Tarver bomb had RJJ out in that 2nd fight. No matter how perfect that punch was it was not a Joe Frazier hook. Joe lands one and prime RJJ is decapitated.

If Joe can land it, which he would and RJJ would not hurt him. Ali bounced all kinds of shots off his head and Joe kept coming.

I am EXTREMELY CONFIDENT that Roy would not last 15 rounds with Frazier.

In fact I'd guarantee it. No way Roy makes it to the final bell.

In fact, make that 10 rounds.

Big difference between Ruiz and a prime Frazier, although I know that's not what you were implying.

Roy would land on him freely...right up until the moment he went to sleep.

As much as i think Roy is an overrated fighter who was bad for the sport...I wouldn't want to see him put in a ring with Frazier. Roy doesn't land at will just as Ali didn't until he'd closed Joe's eye. Also, Roy tends to use a hook where others use a jab...

Jones could beat a plodder over 10-12 rounds with the right ref in charge and even this would be a fine performance. BUT an all-time HW???

Jones wouldn't beat Bob Foster let alone Joe Frazier.

Jones isn't tough enough to absorb a, "Joe Frazier-style" beating. That was over many rounds, & sometimes, guys were never the same again (as Frazier correctly noted).

Did you ever suspect that Joe sometimes would keep you in there for the practice?

I agree with Jones being one of the best of all time and one of the most talented fighters....but Frazier would have the perfect style/power for Roy Jones to end up like Benny Paret.

In the interview in the ring after Quarry-Frazier I, Frazier said something to the effect that as he felt the steam going out of Quarry that he (Frazier) paced himself a little. He said he would step it back up if he felt Quarry trying to mount an attack.

Remember how easily Frazier flattened Foster? Jones, I'll give credit to being faster than Bob, so I'll say a crushing kayo in the 5th or 6th round.
