Emile Griffith

Post by elmersalsa »

Hello Boxing World:

Emile Griffith, Triple Crown Boxing World Champion, for sure and for certain is one of the greatest fighters of all time. I think The Ring Magazine did not ranked him high enough on the their edition of "The 80 Best Fighters of The Last 80 Years" and is a CRYING SHAME!!!

They had ranked Ike Willimas, Fighting Harada, Salvador Sanchez, Gene Tunney, George Foreman, Mickey Walker, Larry Holmes and even a guy that Griffith beat twice, the great Dick Tiger ahead of him, in which to me was a total DISBELIEF.

I compared one by one Griffith's accomplishments against these other greats and Griffith to me was better. The only thing that I can see that the MAJORITY of these guys were better than the Islander was their overall pro record, in which Griffith had a great flaw. But in terms of longevity, quality of opposition, contributions and influence, awards and accomplishments and even in world records, I saw Griffith over them.

The other thing I disagree with The Ring is that they have ranked Aaron Pryor, Felix "Tito" Trinidad, Wilfredo Gomez, Miguel Canto, Tiger Flowers, Lennox Lewis and others that I cannot remember, ahead of Tommy Hearns??? NO WAY!!!

I think The Ring did not give these 2 great men, Griffith and Hearns, any JUSTICE!!!

By the way, who would have won in a fight between Tommy Hearns and Emile Griffith???

I would pick Griffith to outpoint Hearns at Welterweight.

The Ring magazine has become a joke. Whoever does their fact-checking and historical research is very lazy, as they rely on myth often over fact . That being said, I can understand Tunney, Foreman, and Walker being ranked over Griffith, but probably not the others.

Trinidad ranked ahead of Hearns? They should fire themselves.

Griffith-Hearns at 147. Griffith by late TKO in a war.

Yes, I got it... I agree in some rankings, but definately not Trinidad over Hearns or Harada, Sanchez, Tunney nor Walker over Griffith.

If I can remember the first 25 were like this:

1. Ray Robinson, 2. Henry Armstrong, 3. Muhammad Ali, 4. Joe Louis, 5. Roberto Duran, 6. Willie Pep, 7. Harry Greb, 8. Benny Leonard, 9. Ray Leonard, 10. Pernell Whitaker, 11. Carlos Monzon, 12. Rocky Marciano, 13.Ezzard Charles, 14. Archie Moore, 15. Sandy Saddler, 16. Jack Dempsey, 17. Marvelous Marvin Hagler, 18. Julio Cesar Chavez, 19. Eder Jofre, 20. Alexis Arguello, 21. Barney Ross, 22. Evander Holyfield, 23. Ike Williams, 24. Salvador Sanchez, 25. George Foreman.
Tomorrow I will bring 26 to 80.

I may stand alone on this one but I would not rate Ray Leonard quite so high.
