Zsolt Erdei v Fragomeni - spoiler
Action packed fight out of Germany tonight sees Erdei move up from lightheavy and grab the WBC cruiser title from Frago. Majority decision I think, but a fair one.
Really unlike a lot the boxing matches I've seen Erdie in, where he pretty much stays in charge and out boxes the other guy. After taking an early lead, he looked in real trouble as the bigger and stronger looking Frago kept the pressure on, scoring often with some heavy shots to head and body.
But Erdei showed real heart, as he stayed in there and swapped punches right to the end, edging a close one. Very good fight.

Yeah I didn't score it, but thought Erdei looked a close winner there, somehow. Can understand how it could be seen differently by the Italians maybe. and others.
Weird that Frago's cornerman, with the ice pack, was wearing a suit and tie. His manager I guess. Ex champ Patrizio Oliva was in there too, who looks much like he did in his fighting days 25 years ago, just with grey hair.
Some good boxing coming out of Germany lately, another ZDF show next Sat, the heavyweight rematch, and the following week is psycho boy Brahmer.

Re: Zsolt Erdei v Fragomeni - spoiler
all that effng bitching on the current scene about this fight.
i said this would be a good fight, and this is what matters, at this time.
and it turns out it was better than just good.
erdei's a very capable world class boxer let down by his promoters who have ruined numerous careers.
erdei v wlod - the mandatory - another good fight.
reckon universum will sacrifice erdei and feed him to alexeev next year. alexeev can be a good world champ. i like snaking the names of my fave fighters into threads seemingly unrelated to things, finding a connection...

Is Wlod the mandatory? I heard some people mentioning Herbie Hide. Those have the potential to be great fights, but Erdei is going to have to avoid trading shots toe to toe like he did tonight with guys that are big hitters.Autobarn wrote:all that effng bitching on the current scene about this fight.

You could really see in the early rounds that Erdei is indeed highly talented. Good speed, defense, and technically solid. Tremendous heart too, its a shame his career has been practically a waste up to this point, at least in comparison to what it could've been. He could have got on beating much better opposition than he has.
I don't see him doing much more at CW, unless of course he takes the same path he did at LHW, but it will be more challenging now against bigger guys.

Gonna download this fight today, sounds like a belter. I have always thought Erdei has great boxing skills but his attitude and opposition level have held him back up to now.

It was an amazing fight. Candidate for FOTY. Have a good time watching it, although its not the same when you know the result.
Re: Zsolt Erdei v Fragomeni - spoiler
i think no one wants to fight herbie, his promoters seem to have no clout, and things set him back when godfrey pulled out. godfrey will fight cunningham for the IBF belt vacated by adamek. i believe frago owed wlod a rematch due to closeness of their fight (another 12 round cruiserweight classic) and due to wlod's high ranking. so erdei will have to fight him at some point. a which point i'm not sur,e now that you mention herbie.crusader wrote:Is Wlod the mandatory? things are getting interesting for erdei. a very small cruiser. can he beat a solid cruiser in wlod, and a former heavy in hide? blimey, i am interested in his career now.
then he can come back down and school andre bored (ward) in multi million $ catchweight!

One of the best fights of the year. Watched it on ZDF.
I thought Fragomeni edged it by a round. Great action throughout, the last round was a belter.

Erdei said at the end of the sixth he wanted to pull out of the fight but his corner kept him in it, looking forward to getting the disc through of the bill, sounds an interesting card with Tajbert winning as well.

Re: Zsolt Erdei v Fragomeni - spoiler
i thoght erdei won by a round, great fight should do it again
Re: Zsolt Erdei v Fragomeni - spoiler
goes to show what an exciting fighter frago is. he's really a blown up light heavy yet he went 12 bitter rds v wlodarczyk and in the next fight, loses a narrow slugging match to erdei. these are 2 brilliant battles and i urge anyone to watch them.
frago also had a belter with one david haye, currently the WBA heavyweight champion. frago's record vs top fighters is a bit spotty but this is one small dude who can fight. blimey, haye wasn't exactly hitting "duck eggs" in his european title campaign, was he?
erdei-frago might be my fave fight of this year. what a pace, what grit from both sides. erdei, regarded as a soft paper champ, really proved his mettle, despite being too small for the cruiserweight division. both were spent at the end. these 2 really dug deep. erdei will vacate the WBC 200-lb title and pursue campillo (WBA 175 champ) or cloud (IBF 175 champ) after brief success at 200-pounds. (leaving brahmer free to grab his WBO 175 title). a shame frag won't get a rematch. surely he and wlod will be the 2 top contenders for the vacant battle. there could be at least one rematch of a great 2009 cruiserweight fight, then.
