Sexton v Williams

Post by Stiff_jab »

Sounds to me like this is going ahead middle of Feb in Norwich. All 3 of the Walsh brothers will also be on the bill. Should be a good (and VERY loud night!!)

It will be interesting while it last, I wouldn't rule Williams out, he can still dig a bit but you do have to favour the younger, fresher Sexton.

I might fly over for this - I am a converted fan of Sexton and like his boxing style. I would also pay to see Liam Walsh who looks like a quality prospect.

Terrible that Danny should be allowed to box. There will always be people who are in it for themselves whispering in his ear that he can still re-discover their best form.

I am not a fan of Williams but I think he will beat Sexton.

Sexton is still a six round fighter in essence - he is a novice holding a title belt.

A quarter of his wins were three rounders in the prizefighter series.

Williams is a twelve round fighter.

Sexton is a nice boxer for a man is size but he isn't going to knock Williams out.

I see it going like the Gammer fight - Sexton reminds me a lot of Gammer to be
honest and wouldn't it be lovely for Williams to have Sexton draped off the bottom
rope in front of the Lord Mayor like he did with Gammer in Neath.

I am going for a Williams win. :box:

I would love to see the scrote brothers all get their first loss but thats looks unlikely! :witzend:

Was a 12 round fighter. He was an utter shambles in Prizefighter and struggled with 3.

I suppose Carl Baker is a 12 round fighter is he?

Williams is going to get knocked out again, his only chance is to nail Sexton early, hard and often and get him out of there.

Williams is about as well balanced as a snowboarding Gnu these days, he wont be able to get out of the way of anything Sexton throws, and even his once vaunted power, isn't what it was.

You are comparing two different formats. The prizefighter series is a three round contest of whirlwind action
and if we are talking Williams vs Baker then Baker came out storming for a first round finish and he nearly
got it - Baker is a strong, powerful fighter - but in the end Baker couldn't do it and if the fight had go on another
round then it would have been Baker getting stopped.

Sexton is more of a boxer than a guy who will go out than throw early bombs - If we are all being fair then we should
look at hindsight at why Sexton is commonwealth heavyweight king - he was brought in as an easy defence for Martin
Rogan - a novice who had been stopped by Derek Chisora. But as it turned out that Rogan was exactly the right fighter
for Sexton to use his skills on.

The facts are this, Sexton was blowing out of his arse after 6 rounds in both fights with Rogan. You can't get a 12 round engine
if you have had three 3x3 rounders and three 6x2 rounders on your resume of 14 fights. Williams has come in at nearly 300lbs and gone
12 rounds.

Williams can still punch and Sexton does not have the arsenal to knock Williams out nor is slick enough to outbox Williams.
Williams to stop the exhausted Sexton in 10 rounds and it will be something like the Williams vs Gammer fight - you'll see.. 8)

Hey - I could be wrong though - but sooner or later Sexton will be relived of his title! Can't wait to see it! :TU:

Danny seems to get hurt by everyone he faces these days, I honestly think he's utterly shot now. The first shot Sexton lands flush, he''ll be wobbling like Vanessa Felts's arse.

Williams does normally tend to get up after being hurt too, he is still a banger, whereas Sexton is still chinny, lacking stamina and not a puncher himself.
I reckon this has the ingredients for a real exciting fight.

Sexton will control this fight, epically if Williams decides to just stand there with his right hand wound the whole time.

I can see Sexton landing lots, starting behind the jab then planting long rights once he feels out Williams, he will out move to Williams left easy. The fight will be stopped early say 5-6th round - if not a clean KO in favour of Sexton from a big right.

The only thing Williams will have I believe is power, but I don't see him being able to deliver his right onto Sexton that often.

This is a good test for Sexton and the outcome will show that he should be at the top of the British scene one again. Let's face it, the way he controlled Rogan in both their fights, if Sexton fights even performs half as well he did against Rogan last time out, he will take this win comfortably.

I know you are his mate from school so Mr Objectivity you aren't so, I will try and put a more neutral slant on this fight.

I don't see Sexton landing lots at all - he doesn't have the experience to marshall Williams around the ring for one, by the way you are making it sound - you seem to think Williams is just going to stand there whilst Sexton pops out his jab! No chance - Sexton is going to face the hardest one puncher hitter in his career - and mark my words - Williams won't let him off the hook when he lands.

The claim that Sexton is going to score a clean KO is laughable! Thats not Sexton's forte whatsoever and he won't do it against Williams - to KO Williams - you need something approaching world class power, Sexton couldn't KO Istavan Keveckses or Pele Reid - so he is not going to KO Danny Williams.

Sexton has poor stamina, evident in both Rogan fights - Williams has been schedueled for 12 rounds more times than Sexton has had fights - I don't see where you think Sexton will control the ring or the pace when he couldn't do it against a fellow novice in Martin Rogan, a fighter (who admittedly in hindsight) was tailor made for Sexton.

Williams has faster hands (though slow feet) more heart, more experience, more battle hardened and the only reason Sexton has a 40% chance of winning is because Williams is shot! He should retire - but this would be a fantastic win before heading off into the sunset.

I may be wrong but I don't think so. It will be similar to when Gammer fought Williams - Gammer had early success with his speed and movement but Danny hunted him down and it is going to be something similar with Sexton in 'Narridge' Williams in a 10th round stoppage win. :TU:

Williams just needs to throw bombs as soon as the bell goes. Danny still has one hell of a punch. Rogan has put Sexton on queer street a couple of times. So a Danny bomb would do the job no problem.

If Danny stands there, like he did with Audley. He'll get knocked out within 5.

However this fight turns out. I can't see it lasting more than 5 rounds.

Carlos, actually a very good post and not your usual biased anti-Sexton bashing that I've come to expect.

You make good points and if Williams lands it will be the harest shot Sexton's ever had to take. Although Sexton's chin isn't as bad as some people seem to imply. The only times he's been hurt has been through lack of stamina rather than a bad chin. If Williams can take it into the championship rounds then he has a chance, but he's so shot that I think a Sexton TKO around 4-5 is likely. I agree, no way Sam sparks Danny... he hasn't got the power at this point in his career but he does look to be punching harder with every fight.

I am not anti-Sexton in regards his ability and his skills - he is a decent boxer though if we are fair he was manouvered into the position he holds today as a result of being an easy mark for Rogan first defence via his 6 round defeat against Derek Chisora. Sexton is a champion without having the stamina and the experience for 12 rounds - which as you know, you can't gain in a gym.

I am anti-Sexton though because of his mouth - My God, he has a right gob on him hasn't he? It doesn't come across as natural - he should tone down the daft pre-fight comments I think, he would be easier to like.

I think Sexton could do with a few 8-10 round fights against American heavyweight oposition - we never see that anymore in this country for some reason and it is a shame. I think a few fights such as a 10 rounder in Norwich against someone like DaVarryl Williamson would be a better bet than jumping from Rogan to Williams which in my opinion is a massive step and though Williams is shot - he is nowhere near shot enough to be taken out by a near novice such as Sam Sexton.

Williams has never returned to his top form since the Klitschko bludgeoning, but since Alrich landed some big square bombs on him he seems to have detiorated rapidly to the point where non-hitters like Sosnowski and McDermott can badly hurt him, and now obese journeyman Carl Baker had his head spinning & legs gone with what looked like cuffing shots.

Danny as much as I love the fat b#stard is shot to pieces, he was so bad versus Baker his licence should be revoked.

Gawd, that'd be something to see -- a Yank brought over for a heavyweight ten-rounder! I'd forgotten that was even possible!

Though I think DaVarryl Williamson would splatter Sexton to be honest -- the bloke can crack with that right hand & although definitely chinny as eff he takes a more solid shot than Danny Williams these days (though that ain't saying much, is it?).

I'd love to see a fading Yank brought over to play with the merry-go-round of (ex-)Sports Network heavies, but maybe the powers that be remember Dominick Guinn beating Audley & just think "Well, he looks like shite against fellow Yanks, but..."

When was the last time a name American heavy came over to test a British prospect? They all stay mired in a European pool of slugs these days. You probably have to go back to the days of Bruno & Mason? Ossie Ocasio tested Lennox Lewis though.

I think Michael Sprott has only boxed two yanks his whole career!

All of which was why (though I know Monte was at the end of his career) I was chuffed to see Haye flatten Barrett.

British heavies haven't had the confidence to fight Yank ex-world title challengers since as you said, Lewis & Bruno. Audley's misadventure with Dominick "I couldn't even beat Sergei Lyakhovich" Guinn has rattled them all.

Although Danny W obviously fought Tyson, I feel that was different as it was a Yank marquee name who thought he'd found someone he could crush spectacularly.
