Wilt Chamberlain......amatuer boxer?

Post by Brutu »

I seem to remember reading in one of the articles about the proposed Ali/Chamberlain bout, that Chamberlain admitted to having boxed
at least once as an amateur.
Anyone know when, where and with whom

I think thats where I originally read it,but still asks the question against whom?
I would think it happened in Philaladelphia in the early 1950's.
BTW in 1962,Chamberlains reach was listed as 89 inches,
but on the Wide World of Sports when he was on with Muhammad Ali it measured 92 inches, although there may have been a little slack in the cloth measuring tape possibly,Ali's reach was measured on same show as 78 inches which I think is shorter then usually listed.

I came across an interesting bit of info in an article dated April.22.1971 about the negotians for the planned
Muhammad Ali-Wilt Chamberlain, 12 round fight that was to be held
July.26.1971 in the Houston Astrodome.

"Chamberlain,a star for Cooke's Los Angeles Lakers, has had only a dozen fights,
all as an amateur more then 15 years ago".
