I'd seen Holyfield was fighting Botha, but didnt read an article about it, not really interested in the bout at all so didnt realise it was in Uganda.

The fact its being staged in Uganda shows how meaningless this fight is, nobody in South Africa is even remotely interested in staging it.

This is a title , the WBF world Heavyweight Title, that has been contested in such legendary venues as The Mansfield Leisure Centre : http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=5250

(Well, this one was Crusier, but close enough.0

On the subject of meaningless fights in Africa did anyone hear who won between 54 year old Bash Ali and Bobby Gunn or did it even go ahead?

Our man Asterix lived there when he was a kid.

To be honest, I doubt this fight will happen, or at least not in Uganda. Every so often, someone comes up with an idea to put a big name on in a Third World country, but how often has it ever actually come to pass? Even as recently as last July/August, Holyfield was supposed to fight in Ethiopia, but it never happened.

I find it really strange that this is supposed to be happening there, and 80,000 people in attendance? Maybe the country has changed hugely. I wonder how much it would cost to go out there and see this.

Seriosuly, I'd love a trip like this.

Security-wise it's actually pretty safe- From the official governement guide:

Around 15,000 British tourists visit Uganda every year (Source: Ugandan Immigration Department). Most visits are trouble-free. 30 British nationals required consular assistance in Uganda in the period 01 April 2008 – 31 March 2009 for the following types of incident; deaths (6 cases); hospitalisations (5 cases); and arrests, for a variety of offences (11 cases). During this period assistance was also requested with regard to lost or stolen passports (52 cases). See the Crime section of this advice for more details

Kampala is a relatively safe city. By day you can walk the streets and visit local markets. But opportunistic crime such as burglaries, muggings and drive-by bag snatches do occur in Kampala. The Kololo Airstrip area of Kampala has a history of thefts from vehicles and muggings, some involving violence. We strongly recommend that you avoid going out on foot, after dark. You should not make yourself an obvious target for muggers and pickpockets by carrying large sums of cash in the streets or wearing expensive looking jewellery or watches. (Pretty much what they say about most places.)

I think our houses were burgled 3 times in the 4 years we lived in Uganda (1991-1995). Twice while we were sleeping and once when my Uncle was supposed to be looking after the house but went off drinking and left the doors unlocked. :KO:

you're having a laugh aren't you?? 6 deaths....52 nicked passports, from only a few thousand. "Don't go out after dark"....that'll draw the tourists right in that will.

actually I was on a course last year with a retired fella and he went out there Gorilla watching of all things. I thought I'd never heard of anybody going there but in actual fact I have.

Why the the hell you go to watch 2 old men fight though I don't know.
