“Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
Unbeaten Sheffield prospect Steve “Superbad” Barnes will be hoping for an early night when he features on the undercard of the Darren Barker – Wayne Elcock British Middleweight title showdown at the Brentwood Centre this Saturday night.
The Sheffield teenager has so far scored a hat trick of wins in the pro game and will look to extend his perfect record at the weekend when he takes on Pavel Senkovs.
The Mansfield based Latvian has never been stopped but Barnes is a big fan of early nights and his father, Steve Snr. is hoping he can extend that philosophy into the boxing ring.
“Steve really eats, sleeps and breathes boxing when it comes to his pro career,” revealed Barnes Snr. “He’s 100% dedicated, he doesn’t drink or smoke and he’s rarely out. In fact he’s in bed early every night, this is all he’s wanted to do since he was a kid.
“For Steve it’s all about living the live of a pro boxer seven days a week, 24 hours a day. He’s a quiet kid but he’s very, very determined and I’ve never seen anything or anyone faze him.”
Barnes has been based in the legendary Ingle Gym in Sheffield since his amateur days and his father believes that grounding has given him an excellent foundation for the pro game.
“It’s the best gym in the county as far as I’m concerned. The pro game is obviously very different to the amateurs, it’s a real man’s game but he gets great sparring in the gym and as long as he keeps busy and keeps developing I’ve no doubt he can go a very long way in the sport.”
Barnes clash with Senkovs features on the undercard of Darren Barker’s clash with Wayne Elcock for the British Middleweight title on a Hennessy Sports event which is live on ITV4.
The undercard also features Colchester’s Lee Purdy defending his Southern Area Welterweight title against Wokingham’s Mark Douglas while exciting light middleweight puncher Yassine El Maachi will also be in action alongside Daniel Cadman, Bradley Evans, Bobby Ward and Phill Fury.
Tickets for the bout priced £30 and £80 are available from the Ticketline box office on 0844 888 4402 or via www.ticketline.co.uk.

Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
i think i will be having an early night if hes anything like he was on his first televised performance....
Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
Yeah that's him - nice lad actually and can really fight (Dominic and Brendan rate him on a par with any prospect they've ever had at wincobank, other than Naz) but boxed very poorly last time out, by his own admission. tried too hard to knock the kid out and forgot to box - desperate to impress on telly
he's had a few months off due to an injury problem that had been hampering him for a long time and he's now back, injury free, looking sharp in the gym. trust me, this kid has real talent, punches very hard indeed (breaks ribs in sparring), is incredibly dedicated and is seriously tough. But due to his limited amateur experience (boxed for England and won nearly all of 40-odd amateur fights but turned pro at 17 on Irish license) he's gonna need some learning fights to bring him through.
Deffo one to watch out for a couple of years down the line

He looked awful in his last fight. No real power either (or so it seemed). His defence was non existent.
Still, people who know far more than me rate him very highly, so there must be something there. Be interesting to see how he develops, as he is very young at only 18.

Sounds good, aside form breaking ribs in sparring - bit heavy that isnt it..

Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
Good luck to him.I think he has tremendous talent, and being so young, has all the time in the world to develop.Without wishing to put pressure on him, I do anticipate world titles from him, or European level at the very least.Meanwhile, I hope he is allowed to just box regulalry and learn his trade well.
Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
Unfortuanatly if he's doing interviews before fights on ITV, has his father bigging him up about how great he is, then he sint going to be allowed to just box. If they want him to just box then hide him away on the undercard, with no TV pressure, and let him learn his trade. Sticking him in front of cameras for interviews at 17/18 with only 2 fights under his belt is asking for trouble from a fickle boxing community.
Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
that's true - hopefully will be better acquainted with the pressure now and will perform better
Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
What can be said about his fight tonight?
Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
That it showed that this is another over hyped 'prospect' who suffers from believing in the back slappers and hype about himself.whicker wrote:What can be said about his fight tonight?
Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
Other than Kell Brook, who do the Ingles have at the moment who is "going places?"
Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
just amused at the press release....he's really dedicated, he doesn't drink or smoke or go out much....
well I wouldn't have expected him to be on 20 Marlboro a day like!
I didn't really take to him on his 1st TV outing as he's very strong and just wanted to bully the kid with natural advantages...but in fairness that is hardly a reason not to like someone
but whoever said they need to get him out of the TV spotlight quick sharp was dead right or he'll implode. He'll be back, but another night like tonight on the TV, and he'll not recover from it IMO.
It doesn't help that he, or certainly his Dad in any case, and trainer I think, were talking about world titles in his 1st TV appearance (2nd or 3rd fight I think)....then when he stated saying it himself....
fact is tonight he fought a kid that I'd never heard of that was 7 and 3 and when the kid hit him back he didn't have a clue what to do. Not far away from being stopped in fact. Well done Bailey, great fight

Re: “Superbad” Barnes a fan of early nights
Thats twice now I have seen him and based on those performances, he is going nowhere. Fought the same way on both occasions and was lucky to win his last fight. This time he lost and it was bound to happen. He doesnt come to box, he just wants to take people out with one big punch. The only advice you could give him is learn to box for a couple of years and then try again. I know he is only 18 but a lot of kids his age show real promise, sadly this lad doesnt.
