Geoffrey Hynes (ref)

Post by stujones »

Seems to be a commentators favourite....... a favourite for a slagging off.

Did you hear John Rawling wondering if he was going to score on of the fights (I think it was the Steve Barnes fight) correctly, cause he is "inexperienced" and then he highlighted some blunders he made.

Similarly, Steve Holdsworth made a bee line for Hynes, before he put a foot wrong, on the Miranda vs Joey Vegas card (shown live on Eurosport), and then each time Hynes gave the fight to the right man, Holdsworth would make the ironic comment like "oh my goodness, referee Hynes agree's with me thats a turn up".

As I don't think Hynes is a A star referee, I do tend to only see him quite infrequently - undercards of televised London shows. So just really a few questions.

1) How long has he been refereeing proffesional fights. He seems to have been around for a long time.

2) Is he as bad as the commentators seem to think he is? I can remember a few times him going with the home town fighter - but I cannot really single him out as being particularly bad.

He's a poor official of a rough and tumble fight in my experience. Not authoratative enough, however, the fro is becoming outstanding.

I was waiting for the other two Pips and Gladys to come out.

i thought that was a bit spooky too. Fck's sakes mate they're both aware they may get KO'd no need to add extra pressure.

Can you imagine a 21yrold Mike Tyson eyeballing an opponent then the fckin ref saying...."OK guys, 12 rounds of boxing, or less....".....who do you think that statement might psychologically upset the most. Duck egg.

Can't say I complained about how he reffed though. IMO there should be no such thing as a bad, or less competent ref. You either do it well, or you shouldn't be allowed to do it at all.

He seems competent enough.

I don't see why there is an issue.

Of course, a single referee should never be the person scoring a fight, but then that is something that can be discussed elsewhere of course.

agree totally with the Jon-Lewis line, he is also poor at judging fights, remember first seeing him ref the first matthew tait-dean powell fight in 1996 and Powel won by a street imo, Tait was given every round by him...

back to the main topic, i think Hinds got undue criticism from Rawling, who always makes balls ups himself, getting names wrong etc..he probably says Terry O'Connor is a good ref....

I always found Lewis excellent as a ref, if I were to criticise it would be his scoring not his reffing
