Tune-ups that didn't read the script ?
In light of Green's trouncing of Jones can anyone think of any other 'tune-ups' that didn't read the script?
I'm thinking Carlos Baldomir but there must be others
Sturm didnt read it either against DLH but unfortunately the judges did !
I think Michale Bent was meant to eb a tune up for Morrison when he blew him out, but then I dont recall what fight was lined up

Prescott certtainly didnt read the script

Baldomir is the most obvious one for me, the intrigue of Zab v Floyd had dropped significantly following that result.
RJJ made a daft mistake picking Green as a tuneup, I felt this fight had an element of danger for Jones when it was announced. In his prime he'd have boxed rings around Green and most likely stopped him but now those reflexes are gone and that dodgy chin is a much easier target to hit nowadays and a big hitter like Green(who to be fair is not a bad fighter by any means, he's certainly capable of beating some top super middles and light heavies) is going to test that chin as soon as possible.

Benn V Malinga
I think one of the commentary team actually said "This wasn't in the script."

Wasn't Hopkins supposed to be used as a stepping stone for Pavlik to move into the top end of the P4P list? That didnt happen! BHOP turned back the years and smashed Pavlik to bits.

Scrap Iron Ryan-Thaxton. It wasn't even for Ryan's British title.

Norris-Mullings.
It cost Terrible Terry a fight with the Golden Boy and ended his career on the big time!
If memory serves ODLH was raging at that. I think he knew Terry was there for the taking which of course he was. was going to be promoted as a superfight as well even though Norris was starting to look pretty shot!

Yes, probably the most famous tune-up that went wrong. After Douglas, Tyson-Holyfield was probably going to happen. However, Douglas ruined that script, so it did not happen until some six plus years later.MacTavish wrote:Buster Douglas
Nobody can take the win away from James, but Tyson really did hardly any training for him. We only saw him training sparingly, sparring Greg Page, where he got floored. At that time, Tyson was more interested in Japanese women, than training!
Just shows you doesn't it!

No ones's mentioned Vivian Harris Vs Carlos Maussa yet? When Harris nearly made a fight with Hatton before he made the Tszyu fight, a lot of people were picking Harris to beat Hatton and calling him world class.

@ Cannibal Not sure it qualifies
Would Hatton have fought Harris if he won, after being dicked around the 1st time?

Balboa-Thunderlips
The strain of that contributed to Mickey's death.

I think it qualifies in that at the time Harris was talked about being in the same league as Hatton and other top guys in the division and Maussa had nothing going for him other than an awkward style that was very novice looking.
The Hatton fight did fall through because he wanted more than the 750k he was offered, but I think he would have had a big fight on the horizon once he sorted out his promotional disputes.
I think Billy Graham was in the studio during that fight and he was like
"There goes a pay day"

Baldomir-Judah and Raheem-Morales didn't even prevent the fights they were tune-ups for, though. Let's hope something similar doesn't happen with Jones-Hopkins. I was actually looking forward to that, but of course it's pointless now.
Re: Tune-ups that didn't read the script ?
Tony Mundine v Luis Rodriguez. Supposed to be a warm up for Mundine senior to fight Carlos Monzon, "El Feo" knocked Tony down twice in the first round, the second time Tony stayed down.
Re: Tune-ups that didn't read the script ?
Roy said after Green beat him that he was going back into retirement. May not be a bad idea.oliverfennell wrote:Baldomir-Judah and Raheem-Morales didn't even prevent the fights they were tune-ups for, though. Anyway, let's hope so. Unfortunately they tend to change their minds once the memory of an ass-kicking fades.
It's all about the money, though. No amount of spin or smoke and mirrors will ever be able to repackage Jones as a world level threat again.
