I know it's an old topic but what is the concensus? He made a stupid remark and has been villified for years...but on the flipside apparently him and Hagler are mates, would Hagler be friends with Minter if he thought he was a raging Klansman?
I know a lot of you out there have a better knowledge of the London scene, what you think?
BTW, he would have taken most Middles out with that shot he landed in the second!
I agree on that one Hurlock, Hopkins said the same thing about Calslappy and it becomes 'all part of the hype machine'
That's why i wanted to get a view from the esteemed posters on boxrec.....
My Mrs Just asked me if Minter was a 'nice bloke?' I said many on here found him obnoxious, but I had to admit I have no idea about the man, and admitted to wondering if a lot of his bad press is a reaction to those comments years ago??
An old boy I know from Bethnal said that his pal filled him in during a changing room row and that generally he was a giant asshole of the highest order.
Bernard Hopkins said exactly the same thing, just the other way round. It's stupid, but doesn't necessarily equate to racism. I definitely wouldn't judge a person on that one sentence.
Its not what he said - its the aftermath through what he said which caused one of the worst riots in British sporting history. And thats why it is remembered 26 years later.
Yes, stupid racist crap has been uttered by fighters of all colours, inexcusable whoever says it.
I remember FW getting a bit angry about comment Lewis was allege to have amde about Vitli that he deemed racist. Does anyone remmeber what as said by Lennox?
As for Minter. I don't think he can be judged on that 1 sentence
Minter said he wasnt going to lose his title to 'some nigger' and Hagler made him pay for it. Kinda like the 1980's version of Hopkins 'I aint losing to some white boy'.

And Calzaghe had the perfect retort: "I'll never lose to a white boy, either. Or a black boy, or a green one"

Don't remember anything like that. FW was probably just upset that Lewis wasn't in his stable. Lennox was a bit out of order for calling Bruno an Uncle Tom, though.

This is more along the lines of the truth. FW would be upset tha Lewis wasn't in his stable, moreso than anything he might have said.
And yeah, I remember the 'Uncle Tom' jibe, which was little bit below the belt, but was a tough fight for Lewis nonetheless.

Never heard he called him an N word
the exact words were "I'm not going to lose my title to THAT black man". Minter was forced to explain on tv the following day that he had not meant it as a racist remark but as a description of Hagler!
29 years ago saying the word black didn't create as much hysterics as today.
He was dropped as colour commentator by bbc after his comments in the aftermath of the McQuigan v Danilo Cabrerra fight were deemed racist!

Worst riot in British boxing history = not much hysterics??
My mistake thought it was racist thugs that latched onto Minters comments that started the bottle throwing. Maybe your right and it was the left wing anti racist brigade that were throwing at Minter

Well, as you illustrated, it was the fact he issued those words that directly caused the riot.

They must have been bad shots. A bottle hit one of Hagler's cornermen's heads I believe
How can someone use a rascist term (the "N" word) and not be rascist to some degree? And for the record theres plenty of people who have ethnic minority friends and use this in their defence when accused of rascism/prejudice. This doesn't take away from the fact that some of views are prejudice.
If its proven he used "that" word, yes he is a rascist IMO. I heard lots of different versions of what he said prior to the Hagler fight though. I'm sure I have a book which quotes him as saying "I'll never lose my title to a black fella." But replace "a" with "that" and its not nearly as bad.
like a few skinheads heard the remarks & thought lets go the boxing
british fans are the worlds worse for being scumbags it's embarrassing.they boo national anthems, never give a silence etc. regardless of minters comment
