OK, is Alan Minter a racist???
Re: OK, is Alan Minter a racist???
Just in case if any of you guys dont know the reason the British Fans threw bottles at Hagler was afew weeks before the bout Johnny Owen was killed in America fighting Lupe Pintor and the American fans booed and threw bottles as Owen left the arena in a stretcher.
The bottle throwing had nothign to do with rascists

2 wrongs hardly make a right even if this is true as I find it hard to believe fans throwing bottles at a fighter leaving on a stretchernapoles7 wrote:Just in case if any of you guys dont know the reason the British Fans threw bottles at Hagler was afew weeks before the bout Johnny Owen was killed in America fighting Lupe Pintor and the American fans booed and threw bottles as Owen left the arena in a stretcher.

The American fans did throw bottles i believe but im not sure if it was directly at the stretcher. But obviously some British fans interpretted it that way.

I spent a few days in Marvins company a couple of years back when he was here for his birthday that the Lonsdale club organised.... and he told me many stories, and one was about the minter remark, he said he never knew anything about it as he was stuck in a hotel, he decided to go out for a walk alone in london, passed a newsagents and saw that remark in the papers, read it, and then he said Minter would have to pay!!....
he told me so many stories, wished I had film them,

I seem to remember Marvin’s retort being about not shaking hands “I don’t touch white flesh.”
Back to Minter. I live in the town where he lived during his boxing days. Used to drive an orange roller around (not sure if he still has it).
The stories are that he was a nasty piece of work in his youth. People were so wary of him he’d enter a pub and everyone would leave. He would get drunk and look to pick a fight and nobody wanted to be in the line of fire. BUT I’ve been told that he doesn’t drink much these days, has mellowed and is a much more approachable guy.
I think he made a racist remark but he isn’t a racist. I’ve spoken to quite a few people who knew him and some who still don’t like him but they all think it was more about being foolish than being full of hate. Minter was apparently angry with the world as a young man and not with any race in particular.

Police evidence from the Hagler Minter fight indicated that it was skinheads throwing the bottles. BBBoC then banned alcohol from fights (but not skinheads, go figure).
In fact Hagler himself has said the same thing prior to an appearance on QoS years back.

I'm sure that wasn't the reason, the morons chucking the bottles wouldn't have know who Lupe Pintor was if he'd hit them with a left hook, plus it was Mexican fans at the Owen fight.napoles7 wrote:Just in case if any of you guys dont know the reason the British Fans threw bottles at Hagler was afew weeks before the bout Johnny Owen was killed in America fighting Lupe Pintor and the American fans booed and threw bottles as Owen left the arena in a stretcher.

No doubt it was the usual football type hooligans who show up a high profile big fights involving Brit fighters, assuming their man would destroy the other guy, and were shocked and enraged that is was over before it really got started.
I think the feeble excuse some used was that Hagler must have cut up Minter by using his head.

As for Minter. I don't think he can be judged on that 1 sentence
Seriously tho, i think that comment hurt bruno a lot. i think it contributed to his problems, think he felt a sell out and that he was letting his people down sometimes. the whole HP sauce, y'knowotimean harry, black and decker thing. Sometimes i feel like screaming at him, "dont sell urself so short frank, the people love u anyway, u dont have to keep up all that crap.."

surely we've all said and done things we've regretted years down the line.its 30 years since that fight -he was a young man who said the wrong thing -hagler certainly made him eat his words

Had a word with Jim Neilly after the Harrison/Hide York Hall riot. He said "I grew up in Belfast, so I wasn't scared"

An ex-colleague of mine was like that, but for Wales. Proudly pro-Welsh, supports the independence movement, supports Argentina/Germany/North Korea if they're playing England.forcefraser wrote:A lot of people say things in the heat of the moment without thinking. You have to remember that Minter was fighting in a different era when "Love thy Neighbour" was considered light family entertainment.
What Hopkins said pre Calzaghe was more controversial when the era is taken into context.
It`s all bollocks anyway, we have got to the point now where you cannot open your mouth without offending somebody. Take the whole "Seasons`s Greetings" debacle. Pathetic.
I used to know a scottish guy who was very outspoken about how much he hated the English. Used to do my head in with his contant crap and he even stooped so low as to wear an Argentinian top to the England v Argentina game in the 2002 World cup. He also claimed he was an "Orangeman" and hated catholics with a passion (I am Catholic) and he bored people with his pointless banter.
Anyway, when his wife moved over here to join him, it turned out she was an English catholic from Liverpool. So much for his show of bravado. I guess some people don`t really believe in what they say.
One day, I found out his dad is English and he was born in London...

What did Minter say after the McGuigan fight that got him fired?

While on the subject of Hagler-Minter, I wonder where those fcukers are who disgraced themselves & England with there deplorable behaviour towards a great champion in Hagler after the fight?
Those people embaressed themselves & possibly did all Boxing out of any chance of ever seeing one of the fighters of all time in action over here in the UK again!

If so, I'd like to hear from them & what they think of such their despicable behaviour on the night Hagler cut Minter to ribbons?hurlock wrote:i wonder if any post on here :!:

Nah they won't be on here, cavemen don't this internet thing.
Re: OK, is Alan Minter a racist???
Minter didnt say that. I was at the weigh in for that fight and Minter said he wouldnt lose his title to a black man. He never mentioned the n word.HomicideHenry wrote:Minter said he wasnt going to lose his title to 'some nigger' and Hagler made him pay for it. Kinda like the 1980's version of Hopkins 'I aint losing to some white boy'.
Having said that, I have met Minter a couple of times and on both occassions I came away not thinking very highly of him.

I used to to think so (that's why I was so glad when Hagler slaughtered him), but I don't think so, after hearing a really good interview he did on telly a good number of years ago.thepocketrocket wrote:I know it's an old topic but what is the concensus? He made a stupid remark and has been villified for years...but on the flipside apparently him and Hagler are mates, would Hagler be friends with Minter if he thought he was a raging Klansman?
I know a lot of you out there have a better knowledge of the London scene, what you think?
BTW, he would have taken most Middles out with that shot he landed in the second!
He basically admitted he was stupid to say that remark & gave Hagler all the praise in the world.

Following his controversial comments,
Minter's fatal mistake was wearing Union Jack Y-fronts at the weigh-in.
It may not sound much now, but that flag was the green light to a baying mob.
An utterly stupid move, but Minter knows that as much as anyone.
His move to become friends with Hagler is an example of sport bringing respect for one another, so if his public gestures say that, I'll credit him with meaning it.
The climate in the UK at that time was change and un-emloyment, with restless people, football violence, riots, conflict in NI & the Falklands, Thatcher beating everyone with a big stick of change.
Not a happy place, Minter was right in the middle of it, carrying the hopes of many who felt they were losing everything they knew.
Ugly days indeed but Marvin certainly stuck it to him, and in doing so, perhaps did his bit to help people think differently about how they saw things.

Quality. I wasnt aware that Calzaghe had responded to Hopkin's retarded statement - which certainly was rascist. That quote from Calzaghe, if true (and I have no reason to doubt it) makes me have 10x the respect I had for Calzaghe.oliverfennell wrote:And Calzaghe had the perfect retort: "I'll never lose to a white boy, either. Good on Calzaghe. Great example of intelligence prevailing over ignorance. To be fair we're relatively lucky in this country re: rascism. America on the other hand...
Re: OK, is Alan Minter a racist???
Minter might be a lot of things but he certainly isn't racist. I spoke to him for a few hours on the Tyson tour last month and he is far from racist.

In the wake of that, he turned up on Normski's Dance Energy show in a segment where he was in the "hood" somewhere, surrounded by a group of homies, with his hat on backwards, pumping his first and chanting "Bo! Bo! Bo!" to music. I'm serious. Unfortunately I don't have the footage but I remember it well. It was cringeworthy.stevieb_8006 wrote:he was right tho......oliverfennell wrote:Don't remember anything like that. FW was probably just upset that Lewis wasn't in his stable.
