Punches with nicknames
Re: Punches with nicknames
I know there was a Hawaiian boxer that advertized his "Hawaiian punch". But for the life of me I can't remember his name. I don't think he made much of a "splash" so to speak.

Actually, I think that was Andy Gannigan's nick name.BoxBuzz wrote:I know there was a Hawaiian boxer that advertized his "Hawaiian punch". But for the life of me I can't remember his name. I don't think he made much of a "splash" so to speak.
Re: Punches with nicknames
I think your right....and he also had the nickname "Mizou" if I recall. If you were west coast in the 70/80's his fights would be televised from time to time. Had a good win streak for a while if memory serves.

Re: Punches with nicknames
Brian Viloria currently uses that nickname, but I believe it's for himself rather than a particular punch.

Re: Punches with nicknames
Bartley Gorman called his kayo punch the 'Bull-Hammer', in reference to the way steers were put to death via a spike being hammered into their skull. I believe the blow was either a full-on hit to the forehead or behind the ear. Gorman kayoed Freedom Lee, his last opponent, with that same punch---one punch actually was all it seemed to have took against the twenty something upstart against the 50+ year old Gorman---and never fought again.

Re: Punches with nicknames
the "Pivot" blow
that George La Blanche introduced into the Middleweight title fight with the original "Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey
and knocked him out with it
later refered to as a 'swinging back-fist in later full contact Martial arts fights)
( the punch was shortly outlawed in professional boxing afterwards of course)
that fight was on August 1889 at the California A.C club and I think Jim J. Corbett was there to witness it.

Tommy Hurricanr Jackson (along with his trainer Whitey Bimstrein)
also developed another punch just for his fight with Patterson,
called the "Yagash" punch.
which was a right-hand to the body directed downwards.

Re: Punches with nicknames
from IRON AMBITION by Mike Tyson (2017)
page 75
when Mike Tyson moved into the Victorian Mansion in the Catskills in 1980.
He was taught a certain punch by Cus D'Amato.
"Early on, I learned a neat little trick.
It was a punch known as the Blinder.
You put your jab out and leave it in your opponents face
for a split second before the ref warns you.
Your glove blinds the guy for a second and you instantaneously spring to the right,
set your weight properly, and launch a six-five-two*.
It was lethal.
* Willie-Bag numbers
number 6= right hook to the spleen
number 5=left hook to the liver
number 2=right hook to the jaw

to just behind the left ear of his opponent,' when they had their chin almost down on their chest..

Re: Punches with nicknames
Jess Willard's "Heart Punch"
which he landed on the ribs just above the heart.
which was the punch that pretty much finished off
Jack Johnson in their fight.
ironically it was to become a favorite punch of Jack Dempsey
and it was the first punch he had used on Willard in their fight.
( although it seems to be missing from most of the available fight footage)

Mike Tyson's "The Brownsville Robber Punch"
Re: Punches with nicknames
Ruby Rob Fitzsimmins called his favorite body punch, his "shift punch." I.e. The Fitzsimmons Shift.
The newspaper guys gave it their own name, The Solar Plexus Punch, but Fitz always called it his 'shift punch.'
It was the footwork that gave it such power. It gained him the title from Corbett and DQed when it went low against Sharkey.

Re: Punches with nicknames
Not sure if it's been mentioned but Japanese boxing great Koichi Wajima threw 'frog jump' punches whereby he would squat down before bouncing up with a big shot.
Wajima is a forgotten fighter these days but he racked up six defences of the world light-middleweight title in the early 1970s before California's Oscar "Shotgun" Albarado finished him in the 15th round of a brutal encounter in Tokyo in 1974. Wajima, who was 31, looked finished but he shocked the boxing world by outscoring Albarado in another bruising 15-rounder in Tokyo seven months later. Wajima barely had time to enjoy it when a tasty Korean by the name of Je Doo Yuh flattened him in seven rounds in Japan in June 1975. Surely this time it was the end for Wajima but in 1976 he faced Yuh again and pulled off a miracle by knocking out his man in the 15th round to win the title for the third time. If they put the same storyline in a movie, nobody would believe it.
