Amir Khan

Post by Spud »

The article in "The Sun" today (Saturday) and the alledged comments from Amir Khan have really dissapointed me - in my most humble opinion Amir Khan is playing the "Race Card" and in addition his bleatings want me to see him get beaten even more this evening by Salita - I dont think it will happen but in my view it will be great if it does.

Khan has in the past claimed he loves Britain - but yet he has supposedly been quoted that he is desperate to leave the UK for a supposed better life in the states.

I find his remarks dissapointing - in addition the article quotes how much he enjoyed Oscar, sugar and a few others coming to his training sessions and making a load of complimentary remarks about him - again in my views and opinion - the remarks are being made in similar fashion to the past where a promoter wants to sign a fighter and thus it will not surprise me at all if we see Khan sign with Golden Boy.

Bye bye Mr Khan.

He said in the piece I saw today that he's proud to be British.
But he does get a lot of stick because he's Muslim. Some of the hatred towards him is terrible.

So he's going to America a country which is doing it's best to turn Islamic nations into ash?

Makes perfect sense.

Anyway I'd say it's more because he's of Pakistani ancestry than being a Muslim, Islam is only a religion not a race.

Why do you say that Spud, given there is clear evidence of racism in the case of Khan? I think to date he's been remarkably restrained in his comments given some of the behaviour exhibited towards him.

How many of the bigots know the difference? Being brown and from Asia is enough to be labelled a 'muzzy' or a 'paki' regardless of their nationality and religious faith.

I would say this mostly isn't about race. As an eg, in the main, Naseem Hamed was well liked and supported. This though is a combination of things, from Khan being chavvy/unlikeable/thick as pigshit, to failing to deliver what fans expected of him, but also, interestingly, I think in recent years people have become more wary of the way the Warren operation works, even fringe fans, and there is a common consensus that noone really wants to watch mismatches any more. It's certainly this combination that makes me want to see him iced.

The thing is if you have got money like khan has life is so much better in the USA than england.
if it was me my car would be parked on the runway and i would be feeling great about leaving.

Even more so for khan as people are obviously nicer to him over there.

Think of waking up in the warm every morning and training!!

:-? Erm, it's true. Plenty of people do play the race card, but Khan has every right to here. Welcome to Britain in 2009. Whether it's right or wrong, people are a little bit more judgemental of Muslims than they were a decade ago.

Think about it. What else is there to dislike about Khan? He seems like a decent guy and he can fight a bit. He's exciting to watch and he puts it on the line. He was popular as a 17 year old medalist and now, five years later, everybody wants to see him get knocked out.

Lets get this straight. Khan is saying he would be a star if he was a "white English boxer".

A. isnt he the biggest name in British boxing at the moment?

B. Isnt he a PPV star earning shedloads and all over the media?

C. Didnt Gavin Rees, a white British boxer, hold the same title as Khan not so long along - who gets more recognition?

D. Frank Bruno and Nigel Benn are possibly two of the most popular British fighters in the past 30 years - were they white?

Maybe Khan needs to realise that whilst he may enjoy the adulation of the "non boxing public" but "boxing fans" identify the carefully choosen nature of his oppoants - blown up over the hill featherweights or those without a real dig. He only once fought a "live" big puncher and we know what happened then dont we.

Sure there are idiots that wont like him because of his race - but on the flip side of that would that average "white English fighter" have the support of the Asain community in the same way Khan does?

I think Khan needs to wise up - fight the best and win - then your recognition will come.

Nigel Benn received death threats throughout his career - just got on with it, Frank Bruno was targeted by some group(possibly C18) because he was married to a white woman - just got on with it, Naseem Hamed got flack as well of racist groups - just got on with it.

Amir needs to ignore it and keep working hard.

None of that really has anything to do with my point, but ok you're right he does have huge recognition amongst the media and fans, but that has nothing to do with some of the irrational hatred he receives, he talked about fans calling him 'paki' after his loss to prescott, should he have to put up with that? Would you put up with that? You got quite offended by Boxerbob's statements in another thread regarding the Irish, what's the difference? I don't know if you keep up with the media in this country but you only have to look at what's been happening recently with the BNP and EDL to know there is a growing resentment towards the Muslim community in this country, reading some of the comments on some of his fight videos on youtube is sickening, while I agree with your points regarding his boxing career that really has nothing to do with the racial hatred towards him that he discussed, I don't think all fans that have a disliking of him are racially motivated, most more than likely weary of the next warren hyped/protected fighter, but to have a crack at him for talking about something which is rife throughout the country is ridiculous, he clearly has racially motivated hatred aimed at him why shouldn't he talk about it? With regards to Nigel Benn he himself stated in interviews that he could have earned twice as much money had he been a white fighter.
Take a look at my location hombre - I'm one of those bleeding immigrants thats over here stealing jobs! :TU: Living in Manchester for the best part of 10 years I am well aware of the rise of anti-Islam but the point Khan made was that if he was a "white English fighter then he would be a superstar" - that in my opinion in bollocks for the reasons outlined above.

Fair enough if he wants to have a discussion about anti-Islam - 100% entitled to do that but if he is going to say that "hate" he gets in because of his ethnicity then he should be prepared to hear some home truths.

Sorry i meant it is his religion that people in the UK seem to have a problem with not his colour.

If he was a white muslim he probably would still get abuse.

The Muslim part is the problem. ( I am brown BTW :) )

Most the flack Khan is getting is because hes pakistani plain and simple. He has already equaled what Hatton did pre-Tyszu and maybe done more and Hatton got far less hate than Khan is, and it took Hatton till the age of 26 to step up. Hatton also was a fair bit more popular but you could argue that was his football aliance

Just logging onto JustinTV or Youtube and you'll see the amount of race flaming going on. Then on the forums everyone wants to see the lad fail, ok hes a dickhead driver, says the odd stupid comment, but so the Eff What? He seems like a decent lad overall

i certainly agree with you Gobbles more than with Spud.

Spud, what the bloody hell's wrong with loving your nationality and wanting to move to the States??

The same sort of people were whingeing when he wore a green and white Pakistani coloured gumshield....(the smallest item of a boxers kit!!!)...heaven forbid he should be allowed to pay some homage to his (historic) homeland.

Onwards and upwards for the kid.

I like him, think he speaks well and fights well. Massive pressure on his shoulders at such a young age.

I'm a qualified English teacher and I aim to bugger off to Seoul next year and put some coppers in the bank and see a bit of the world......I'm fed up of fcking chavs, fed up of council tax, fed up of bent politicians claiming for bars of chocolate on expenses.......would I ever change my nationality, not a bit of it.

Good luck to Mr Khan. He'll find that in America he is probably more warmly appreciated.

My thoughts exactly, Sir Blowe - are we only allowed to dislike people of our own ethnicity?

My dislike (not hatred) of Khan, like most other boxing fans, stems entirely from his personality, his huge ego & grandiose proclamations that are totally out of proportion to his actual achievements/performances in the ring, his past calling out of dangerous fighters he would never actually fight, and finally the paper belt obtained by fighting the weakest handpicked opponents.

I dislike Calzaghe for the exact same reasons, but I doubt anybody with half a brain would dismiss it as racism against the Welsh. Because that would be RETARDED.

Undoubtably there will be people who are racist against him, but are they really significant in their numbers? The lunatic YouTube teenage trolls who crawl around videos writing nonsense about white power, person this, paki that from the safety of their bedrooms? These are a minority of freaks who are not actual boxing fans.

Boxing stars are predominantly ethnic, so if anyone despised non-whites boxing would be the last sport they would follow.

Jeering Amir & raucously applauding Marco Antonio Barrera does not equal racism -- maybe it has something to do with Barrera being a warrior, an incredible living legend who has backed up his words in the ring, has gone toe to toe with the absolute best & is everything Amir Khan is not.

let me point out a couple of facts.

Amir Khan took on the best Amateurs the world had to offer, and he got a Silver Medal.

He then beat the man that beat him....ON NATIONAL TV PRIMETIME, AS AN AMATEUR   .........there's bloody world champions can't garner that level of interest.

I suppose it's his fault that Mr an Mrs Kindelan had Mario too early as well is it, that made him the wrong side of 34 for the rematch. Even tho he had just won an Olympic Gold medal.

Also.....anyone that say Khan should have hung around as an Amateur, which somebody said yesterday, rubbish. He could have notched up 2 defeats in that time, got injured, had to retire, or simply gone to China and got jobbed like RJJ.

He turned over at precisely the right time. In a blaze of publicity having just been Britain's SOLE representative at an Olympic games and having done bloody well. Didn't he get decked by Craig Watson along the way, who now campaigns very nicely a stone heavier than him!! and get up to win??? (ok it may only be half a stone now, but it wasn't at first).
