I don't know if it was "Fixed" necessarily. But Liston ABSOLUTELY took a dive. I've heard that it was for fear that he or Ali would be shot at, or something. I don't know the exact reasons, but if you're asking was Liston legitimately knocked out? Absolutely not. He took a dive for sure.

I think the better poll question, instead of was the fight fixed. Should be " Was the knockout of Liston Legitimate" in which case the answer is NOOOOO!!!!!!End of discussion.

I read tha explanation too. But common sense suggests he made a better target, prone and motionless on the canvas.

I subscribe to Occam's Razor; when you eliminate all the probabilities the most likely probability is correct. He he didn't get up because he knew Ali would beat him silly, siller than he beat him the first time.

What did Liston show in the first fight that would lead a rational person and dispassionate observer to think he could win the second fight. His best round was when Ali was nearly blinded. The only thing he was in Maine was older.

It was as legitimate as Ray Leonard's tko or rtd or whatever against Duran in their rematch. Both Duran and Liston knew it wasn't their night and saw resistance as futile. The first Leonard-Duran fight was so close that all Leonard needed to do was make minor adjustments to win. In the case of Liston he would have had to become a different fighter.

The fun turned sour in a North Florida town called Yulee, a pause for food at a diner at about 2 a.m. We four whites went in with Bundini Brown, Ali's witch doctor who had coined the champ's war cry, ''Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!" The waitresses ignored us. Other patrons glared.

I went to the manager at the cash register, saying we'd like to be served.

''Not with that boy with you," he replied.

''Isn't that against the law, sir?"

''Not here."

''But isn't this the United States?"

''Not yet," he said.

At that moment, Ali burst in, grabbed Bundini and started yelling.

The manager tried to be civil, saying, ''I have to live here. You're passing through. If you'll get on the bus, we'll take some sandwiches to you.

The heavyweight champion of the world couldn't get served a sandwich.

I sort of go along with the argument that Liston knew he couldn't beat Ali. As good as Liston was he was made for Ali, he just plodded forward and couldn't cope with Ali's speed.

The only thing I find odd is if he threw the fight then why go down from a nothing punch in the first round? He would have been better to quit again claiming another injury rather than fall flat after tasting half a punch.

As mentioned before it does bear some similarities to Duran and Leonard in as much that maybe Duran thought he was going to lose and gave up. Maybe Liston just quit far too soon.

it was likely not "fixed" as in "conspiratorially so" But Walcotts incompetence and Liston's lack of enthusiasm to engage certainly made it unusual.

Substitute the word unusual for fixed and you'll get my vote.

However you are sort of a religious zealot on this issue so it's not your head that's in charge when it comes to this discussion. You're all heart on this topic.
Buzz, I see you removed my NEW POST where I quoted the huge vote by boxrec's posters that the second Liston-Ali fake was not fixed.

Boxrec is teeming with devout Religion of Ali members.
