Calzaghe/Earl vs Bennett - Newcastle 18 March

Post by magnus »

According to the excellent Britishboxing.net Joe Calzaghe will defend at the Telewest Arena on March 18th - vs TBA.

More interestingly, Graham Earl will defend his British crown against Commonwealth champ Kevin Bennett. Good match - I think Earl takes clear decision in a competitive contest.

Any thoughts?

Not sure whether his pull-out from Feb show was due to "lack of time to prepare" or "Christ, we haven't managed to get a half-decent challenger".

Guess would be that Scott Pemberton or Antun Echols will get a shot.

I'd love to see Joe fight Mundine but can't see it happening any time soon, I think he's going for revenge againts Siaca.

Hadn't thought about that - have Matchroom still got a deal with Sky ? Think they won purse bids(?). Arthur was complaining about choice of venue when last interviewed....

When have they ever worried about that? Calzaghe's record is riddled with nobodies...

Why wouldn't Arthur/Docherty happen just because it's on the same night?

Phillips/Bennett was on the same night as the Skelton bill

Anyway fuk Calzaghe his career is a total waste of time and I'm not all interested anymore.

Who's to say he'll fight in march? More chance of him pulling out that not these days.

If he's demotivated it's nobodies fault but his own for putting up with the bullshit matches Sports Network have been putting on for him and resigning with them time after time. The guy's a wanka.

I assume he thoght they were both Sports Network promotions - cant recall them promoting twice in one night.

Any chance that FW has purposely done this to try and scupper the Arthur v Docherty fight that he didnt win purse bids for. Esp if Arthur is said to be unhappy....

If it's Pemberton, I'd predict a premature stoppage win for Calzaghe.

True, but the Hartlepool show wasn't shown on TV that night, can't see Arthur/Docherty not being shown.

I would imagine that Earl vs Bennet will be shown as chief support to the Calzaghe fight (as it's a SN show and they have an ongoing contrcat with SKY).

The confusion stems from the scheduled Arthur vs Docherty fight being scheduled for the same night. In an ideal world all three fights would be shown on TV the same night - but I can't see that happening.

Do you think that Khan featuring on the bill may have been a factor in Calzaghe's withdrawal.
