How did you get into the sport of boxing?

Post by Liver Crusher »

Thought I might start a different type of thread, just interested to see how all u guys got into boxing?

I imagine guys like Toppity,Ben k & Adam Height have been in to it for a while?
And also wondering if there are any women on this forum?apart from Marlin........just kidding mate.

Ill start with me...I have always had an interest in boxing as a kid, but Rugby League (Mighty Dragons) was always no.1. I have to say boxing has taken over league as my fav sport the last two years. It all started when I rang the Grange gym 2 minutes from my house to do boxing skills and maybe amateur fighting.Gealy answered the phone, went to a few sessions and the rest is history!

good thread Lowie. :TU:

I used to do most sports as a kid (a long, long time ago), eventually I found my way to the local youth services gym. I'd spar and do skills a bit as a teenager, but unfortuantely boxing was a sport I didn't show much talent in. A few of the blokes I met there did other sports as well, which led me to racing push-bikes ... so i moved on to the next thing and i slowly stopped going. I don't regret it because I was no good...

But from then on I've watched boxing. I haven't always been a strong fan...kind of coming and going, but I was always interested, especially in the local scene. I still know a few blokes who have fought professionally, but haven't seen the inside of a boxing gym for over 20 years.

A few friends at high school were taking Thai boxing classes and dragged me along. I guess I always liked boxing but my peers were doing Thai boxing. I showed a bit of aptitude and had a few am bouts a year later. I fought professionally for two years 1995-96. After my gym split up I switched to boxing training.

Edit: Mid '90s of course saw the rise of Tszyu, and he was a big inspiration for me. There was decent hype around Tszyu on TV, which is significant because there wasn't the internet and other media to go looking for sports that you like. KT was the first boxer that I would regularly visit pubs to watch the PPVs for.

I started assistant coaching about 4 years ago and have been running my own boxing club for the last 2 years. Spar weekly with my boys. :box:

5th grade. Lots of buzz about Hagler - Leonard. Even my teacher was talking about his prediction of the fight to happen that weekend. I read a piece in the paper about the fight and was surprised that these two men were making roughly $40 million between the two of them....and yet were only 160 pounds. I thought it was cool that athletes under 200 lbs could make that kind of money as professionals. Not too many sports out there where men around my size (145 lbs.) have the potential to become millionaires.

Watching the sport or participating in it? My love for the sport started with tales my grandfather told me of an exhibition out he had with Billy Conn during WW2. Think it was scheduled for three or five rounds. One of my earliest memories of the sport was when Douglas beat Tyson, because Douglas came from my state and it was a big deal. I grew up watching Foreman's comeback and Duran when he was in his late 30's up til his retirement at the age of 50.

As for participating, I got my federal ID and hope to make my pro debut.

Been interested in it for years, started following it around 2000/2001 when I moved to Wyong, watching the KT-Sharmba fight at Wyong Leagues and around that time went to a few bouts at the same venue and Gosford leagues. KT, Briggs, Green and Mundine were who got me really following the sport and then started to regularly watch some o/seas fighters (such as RJJ, Gatti).
Were a few times during my time in Wyong where I wanted to start training, as I'd put on a lot of weight while living there (41kgs from lightest to heaviest), to lose weight and get fit but never made that step.
When I moved to Adelaide in April 2005 I met a guy here that trained, so started going with him. Around Feb 2006 started taking it seriously (going more than once a week) and had my first amateur fight in August 06.
Since then I've had 10 amateur fights (had a year (Oct 07-Nov 08) off due to repeatedly breaking my right hand on doc's advise), first one back was March this year and hoping to continue to have more. I fight at middleweight, hoping to get down to welter next year. SA seems to be hard to get regular fights these days unfortunately.
I'm not very good, but I can take a punch and well, I don't care that my record is poor, I'll keep fighting/training till I lose motivation.

My uncle was a golden gloves back in the islands. When he moved in to our house the first thing he bought was a video player and he'd hire out boxing videos everything he watched was either rugby or boxing.
I remember one time we were watching one of the Rocky Balboa movies and when it finished he got up and did like a ten combo in like under 2 seconds, after that I learnt boxing from him and loved boxing ever since.

Good thread, It started with me watching Kostya in his early days inspired me, so at 16 (1992), I decided to give it a go and ended up have a handful of Amateurs with Jack Rennie in Essendon.

I used to listen to fights on 2KY in the early 60s. I think Tiger Black was the commentator.

Fighters like Rocky Gattelari, George Barnes, Sid Prior, Gary Cowburn, Jimmy Carruthers in his unfortunate comeback against Aldo Pravisani. I listened to Cassius Clay and Sonny Liston's first fight in 1964 as well. Later that year Mum bought a TV, using the board I paid her to pay the instalments. After that I watched TV fights. I did a bit of boxing training at the local RSL Youth Club once a week, then trained at Bernie Hall's gym in town, doing some prelim fighting. I have just stayed interested.

First memory was watching the live telecast of Holmes v Cooney in 1982 on channel 7. I was 9 or 10 at the time (not sure what month the fight was in). Since then I have been hooked. The heavyweights were the main thing that kept me interested. Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield. I followed Aussie fighters such as Fenech, Harding, The Waters boys, Cafaro and later on Kostya, Rowsell, Lovemore and of course the Green machine.. Really the love of the sport has never stopped. My games room is a bit of a shrine. I have thousands of fights on tape or dvd..the missus says I am obsessed and I wont argue !!!

Always been a league man, but when i was 11 me and mates use to wrap tea towels around our hands and spar in the backyard, my dads mate came out the back to watch and offered to teach me and my brother to box, this continued for about 8 months and i had a couple of fights then one day my dad pulled me out and told me to focus on football. My trainer/dads mate kind of drifted apart and there was always an urge to just go back to the gym and ask 1 of the other trainers to train me, never eventuating.

I used to watch the waters brothers fight on TV locally, but Mike Tyson made me pay attention to boxing, he made the sport exciting, i actually lost interest in boxing when he went to jail and then Kostya ignited my interest to at least follow him, on one of his undercards I seen Green fight and ever since I've been hooked.
