Aaron Pryor
Aaron Pryor
How good was Aaron Pryor really?
Ive heard alot of talk about this man and have watched alot of his fights but never saw anything out of the ordinary to justify the praise he sometimes recieves.
I think Zab Judah would have had a shot at beating the Hawk.

Aron Pryor was a contradiction to the idea of a boxer. He would take unnessesary punches, would weave when he should have bobbed, and had terrible ring habits at times, but he always won. Well he did before drugs took their toll on him. If you ever saw him fight Alexis Arguello who was an outstanding fighter winner of 3 different titles in 3 different weight classes, you would see a guy who put it all together when it counted. I was a big Arguello fan, and thought that he would exploit Pryors many weaknesses, but dam when they fought the first time, Pryor boxed great, used movement and underrated boxing skills to befuddle Arguello and counter punch him, and box him till he finally stopped poor Arguello in the 14th round. There was the controversy about the water bottled that was possibly laced with speed or something that enabled Pryor to take those huge right hands right on the button, and not even flinch, punches that floored guys before and after that fight. Apart from that he was the better fighter those two nights.

He was a sensational NON-STOP PUNCHING MACHINE if you ask me...Never stopped throwing punches and combinations from all angles. Boxed when he had to box, which was very UNDERRATED in that department because he was overshadow by his fearless agression. Always a fearless and relentless competitor which gave him 27 wins in a row by the way of KO from 1977 to 1983.
If you watch closely the first Arguello fight, Arguello was a victim of an accidental headbutt. After the butt, Arguello was DAZED and did not throw a single punch and was KO'd by 19 unanswered punches.
Let's watch that KO again...How come nobody took notice of that???
But anyawy, I do not take nothing away from Pryor, he won FAIR and SQUARE

I would not imagine any serious collecter would purchase anything, just a fan.
Glad to see he is making money away from boxing though, also hope he is making a good living from it.
A few years ago I saw an advert for a personaly signed copy of ¬ flight of the Hawk¬ meant to get it and just forgot about it, kick myself now though.
Still haven`t been able to get a copy.
Fantastic fighter though.

It's a good read, very honest and open account of a life that's had many ups and downs. I recommend it.tonyevs wrote:A few years ago I saw an advert for a personaly signed copy of ¬ flight of the Hawk¬ meant to get it and just forgot about it, kick myself now though.

I picked up a copy off Amazon.co.uk about a year ago for about £10, I'm glad I did, the price has gone up somewhat.

At first glance, Pryor just looked like a wild man, getting by on adrenaline and non-stop offense. But gradually I realized just how much skill he possessed. He was a great boxer-puncher - drawing fire, dodging and countering with power. His exceptional stamina allowed him to maintain that whirlwind pace. A rock-solid chin shook off direct hits even from the legendary Arguello right hand. But you could sense in Pryor a self-destructive impulse that was bound to overtake him, and it was no surprise when he finally defeated himself. Along with Saad Muhammad, Pryor was the most exciting fighter of the era. Both fought with desperation, as if their entire lives depended on it - maybe the result of their horror-story childhoods. At his peak, Pryor was a virtually indestrucible fighting machine. Must-see bouts: Asprilla, Cervantes, Johnson, both Arguello.

I don't think you'll get it cheaper... its very hard to find and the copies amazon have are probably from America... it's well worth the price though... one of the best boxing biog's I've read... would make a great film!.tonyevs wrote:Wow, what a price for a relatively new book.
Sure you`d get it for much less than what their asking .
